First off, thank you Denob for reminding us in your weekly editorial that we need not hate our tv's to be preppers.
There is a fair amount of good information on tv for those who seek it so I thought maybe we could talk about our favourite prepper like shows a little.
One of my favourites is Victorian Farm on TVO. It's about 3 people living on a farm in a recreation of the victorian era. There is no electricity, no modern machines, no gas power and lots of work. It's a great show to see what life was like back then or what life could be like post grid down.

If your home library contains more volumes about survival-related topics than your local public library, you might be a prepper.
Victorian Farm is excelent show to learn few basics. We watched all the episodes few times.Actualy we do lot of things simmilar way.Lot of things Istill remmember as a kid were used same way where I come from.It is wery rewarding way of life.

There is a whole series of those shows, all with Ruth in them and all very informative. Look to the BBC homepage for the listings. There is also historic gardens, pharmacy, Christmas all with historic settings.
Have not seen one of the episodes yet where I thought they did not do a good job. No special effects, just down and dirty filming and recreation.
I did see the pharmacy ones, great info including how to make aspirin out of willow.
Another one of my favourites is Mountain Men on History Channel. My most memorable episode was when Eustace had to clear the blockage to his hydro powered off grid saw mill. I am still in awe. Something seemingly so simple yet so far out of reach for most of us.
Here's a link to a preview, not my favourite episode mentioned but still an awesome clip.

I just finished watching the US Prepper's tv show the 2013 start to that series. My hope, is that eventually there will be one or two groups of Preppers that will show us in a different light, but I am consistently disappointed. My belief, when it comes to these shows is that it should be educational, not reinforce crazy! Sure there are different levels of prepping and I get that, but what of community, psychology, and skills. Most families they show are in a frenzy to arm themselves and yet have no common sense or training with their weapons(friggin dangerous). Most families they show are stocking food away, but have no idea how to grow their own(garden or animal). Most families don't show the importance of medical supplies(and the skills to use them). No wonder the masses that view this show believe prepper's to be absolutely paranoid! I don't know bout the rest of you, but I'm concerned about taking folks in that come from this mind set. I need the people who live side by side with us to be as psychologically sound as possible. Apparently pepper's on this show are either religious fanatics or doomsday fanatics (exposing young kids to either makes me shiver). Are those my choices of people coming? I'd love to see tv produce shows that teach skill's of survival with a level head. It's that level head that will keep you alive! Just me ranting!
Dakota,
BBC Ray Mears, all of his shows! Them and Dave Canterbury sp... are the only ones that are doing any real education right now.
I think there is always something to learn from every show. You learn how to do some thinks and also how not to do others.Just remember there are lot of scenarios where you will not be able to do anything outside (grow, hunt, fish atc.) for at least a year. For that time you have to be ready almost like the guys on prp. shows. There is a different how to survive short term and how to survive long term.Basically you have to be ready for both.
Henry
Thanks for the tip on Ray Mears programs. I'll take a look!
And yes Henry, I get that there is always something to learn....just on a rant, sorry! Though, it would be nice to see the program present a prepper as a mindful person simply putting together a plan for emergency preparedness.
