I both love and hate this time of year because of all the fresh fruit & veggies. It makes my days seem endless.

Today the plan is to pick up a bushel of tomatoes and tomorrow a bushel of peaches. I haven't made it to my backyard in a week so I have no clue what spices I can do. Plus there is the garden I planted at mom's with zucchini, swiss chard and tomatoes. I am hoping there are enough green cherry tomatoes to make pickles.

If you don't grow your own or you can't grow enough, how do you buy your stuff --
by the bushel or few quarts basket
from a local farmer or from a store

is your home a mess like mine cause of all the food storage work this time of year

Yup. Cucumbers, dill, pears and apples have been dropped off to me this week from my friends and neighbours with offers to pick their garden clean while they are on holidays. I had another offer for crab apples which I am going to have to pass on - there's no more time. I just finish one batch and there comes more for me to do. My garden is bursting and I am barely keeping up with everything else that needs to be done. House cleaning is optional for a few weeks 🙂

My cousin wrote me yesterday: You can tell you live in a small town when there's a box a free cucumbers at the post office 🙂 ha ha!

I made up for shortfalls this year at the Jean Talon Market in Montreal.
2 X 50lb boxes of plum tomatoes @ 18.00 per box
25 lb carrots @ 3.00
25 lb hungarian peppers @ 12.00

Lots of canning planned for this week!

We will be making another trip in a few weeks when apples, peaches and pears are a little cheaper.

wow only $3.00 for 25lb of carrots...what a great deal

I picked up at the local grocery store 25lb boxes of tomatoes for $6.97 - half of what I would pay for gate sales. If I really like the farmer I will pay more money for the same product. Yesterday I discovered that my saskatoon berry farmer also does blackberries. So I picked up 16 pints from him at $4.00 a pint. It is a little more then what I would pay at the store but I love the old bugger  Been going to him for close to 20 years for my saskatoons. He has several 5 pint bags sitting in his freezer for me until next weekend. I am hoping next year my plants will produce enough blackberries that I wont have to buy them.

They suggested a smaller farmer closer to them to buy my peaches from. at about the same price as one of the larger farmers that I usually get my peaches from.

Around mom's place the trees are loaded with apples and pears but none are ready yet....thank goodness as my house looks like a war zone. Poor cats have no clue what is going on with all the jars, boxes and baskets fulling the dining room & kitchen.

Denonb - what are you going to do with the peppers?

Good to know about the Jean Talon Market. I am going to Montreal the weekend of Sept 14th so I will definitely check it out. Is there a particular farmer/vendor I should visit.

No one in particular...just shop the back alleys.
Often vendors will sell cases from the back and only the little baskets out the front.
Do a quick tour at first to check prices, then go back to get the best deal.

Thanks. Will do. I have been there before, but only bought a few things.. Most of the produce was in smaller baskets and I did not even think to ask about bigger ones. I thought I might have to call one of the vendors (there is a long list on them on the net), for bigger orders. But now I know just to ask. Thanks again.
