If you have ever been sucker punched you know how humiliating that can be. Its not so much that if physically hurts. But it is the thought that your opponent lay and wait for the opportunity to strike when you least expect it. One minute you are minding your own business the next you are seeing stars.
We are about to be sucker punched as a nation. The opponent has craftily hidden his intention and done all he could to make sure that your guard is down when they strike. Let me give you the advice that I teach my children. There are three colours of awareness. One is while. This means you are completely unaware that anything is wrong, you mind your own business and you are oblivious to what is going on around you.
Then there is yellow. Yellow yellow means that your are on high alert and that you are ready for action should something happen.
The last colour of awareness is black. Black means that you are taking steps to neutralize a threat.
One can apply these same levels of awareness in financial matters. White means you are completely unaware of what is going on around you. Such as the financial backroom movements of money, gold, silver, stock and bonds. You depend on the media to inform you about what is going on.
Yellow means that you are ready to take steps if something happens like a total economic collapse.

Gold and silver that is not in your hands, lines somebody else’s pocket. Gold and Silver that is stuck in a bank or any other financial institution is like having it at the bottom of a very deep lake. You know where it is, but if TSHTF try getting to it. When it happens the banks will shut down, and it will be almost impossible to even get near a safety deposit box. An overseas account, might as well be at the bottom of the ocean. Most of these, “We’ll hold the gold for you” businesses hold gold stocks and bond’s and not actual bullion. Safe in a Swiss Bank, yeah right, look at what happened to most of the families that put their life savings into a Swiss bank before WW2. It took most of them 50-60 year’s to retrieve it. You talk about a sucker punch. I apologize if your not one of these, but still, I would rather have my precious metals buried in the back yard, then have them where I have no access.

Stuff that is plated is so thin it's almost worthless. I saw some coins on TV that had a few milligrams of gold plate. 28,000 milligrams per ounce if my math is correct. The coins might have had $1 of gold in them.
Old coins are selling for 13x face value, seems like they're worth something. Obviously the higher the purity the more any object is worth. Pure silver needs no refining so it's value would be higher.
I think Sterling silver is around 70% but check that.
I heard somewhere that US nickels have about 7 cents worth of nickel in them.
If people are processing a ton of old cell phones to get the ounce or two of gold out they certainly think it's worth it.

Well I'd say if the shit hit the fan, gold and silver are not going to do much for you. Seeds food medicine stuff like that will be the new gold.

Even in the unlikely event of a real SHTF, there will be "the other side" where things recover.
At the very least, gold and silver in your possession is something that you can count on. Not some bit of paper that some "investor" says is worth x dollars.
Like 'carbon04' I have a few thousand in maple leafs, (the silver not the team) as well the same in dollars, and few small Krugerands. Sure drugs will be a new currency, but so will food, bio-fuel, and alcool. Guns and ammo will be the gold standard, Like my dad once said, the man with the most guns, RULES. Don’t believe me, go down to some of the hot spots in the states, where the cops fear to tread.

see, thing what most people don't realize about silver is, is a rare earth metal...not as described on the periodic table, but its a necessity in modern day communications/ electronic....it is in everthing around you....its the best non alloy high conducting metal known to man....its also in very short supply because its being used up at an immense rate, unlike gold....and it is a finate resource....there will come a time where theres less silver than gold....im thinking about the time of the launch of the ipad 9. (sometime this summer?)

Agreed Carbon. I think it will end up as a better buy than gold for the long term.
