I've got a length of ABS pipe kicking around my garage. It's set up with 2 gasketed screw-on caps, and the diameter is about 4 inches and change. I originally built it for my quad, but I used it once and then bought a box for that.
Anyway, this week I got to thinking I should spread some supplies into my vehicles. So now the pipe is going to be a secondary prepper kit living in my truck. So far it's got a 500 pack of Redbird matches and 2 Moras. Thinking I'll stuff half of it with balaclavas, a few pairs of gloves, socks or the like. Maybe a backup Solo Stove if I scratch together the money. Possibly a few miniature rolls of duct tape, and a space blanket (the heavier tarp version). Maybe some snare wire.
Not sure where I'm at yet for filling it up. Keep in mind that whatever I put in has to survive the winter cold. What would you want in this if it was your only surviving stash?
K I went to MEC at lunch. The kit now comprises the following:
2x Moras
500x Matches
50x Paracord (feet)
2x 50" rolls of duct tape
1x SOL survival blanket
Tempting to get a mini saw for it. But if I get the Solo Stove then cutting wood isn't that urgent.
Ditch half the redbirds and swap in a bic
I would definitely get the saw and Ill mention why. I have been working with wet wood (rainforest guy here) and I have found that splitting would has been a blessing for me. Even if its a 2 1/2-3" piece. Its the inside and the shavings and kindling that I seem to have success with. I personally will never go without a small saw as it has so many benefits. Its easier and safer to cut then break. IMHO the safety factor goes up when breaking. Something that will cut a 6" is what I find to work well.
Whatever tomorrow brings,… I will be there! 😉

x2 that or a cigar lighter, and a magnesium-ferro rod. They can all happily live in the matches box or Ziploc or p'butter tub.
+Nalgene bottle or plastic p'butter tub (it can hold other stuff, like below or above or both)
*A camper bottle with a steel cup might not be bad, or an empty tin can to use as such
+Water purification filter/chems of preference
+Small flashlight or mini lantern and chem lights
If it's an out-out woods kit:
+Tiny fishing supplies (yoyo(s), snelled hooks, lures if inclined) if it's reasonable for the areas your truck will be in but the existing kit might have been ripped off
+Compass unless you're dead reckoning with moss and your watch
If it's an out-out woods kit and it gets cold-cold:
+Small rolled tarp or plastic sheeting of some kind (mattress cover, painting drop cloth)
+Tea light or candle nubs (fire starter, help warm very small space esp. with the space blanket and a tarp to cover it
Funny, in months of prepping I got boxes of ammunition, a book on edible plants, but never once thought about fishing. Huh. Great suggestions so far.
I'm hoping that the worst case scenario for this particular kit will be as kind of a get-home bag. After that there's the annoying scenario where I come home after a disaster and find my house burned down with all my preps 🙁 But ideally it should just be a supplement for my other stashes. One is none and two is one and all that. Think I might also try to get some Datrex rations in there. When I get home I'll try to guess how much space I've got.

Running on the hope that you're exaggerating and have been working on groceries, too, you might want to look into some growing stuff if you don't already. Everybody has room for sprouts (they don't need light and it's way more than sprouted wheat and alfalfa - blech) and most of us have a narrow windowsill somewhere where we could grow at least microgreen chia and fenugreek and leaf lettuce, spinach, purslane, chickweed, thyme, chives, green onions, and skinny oriental cabbages in reclaimed soda or water bottles (or towers of them).
It also occurred to me that you might want to throw a bandana or four in your pipe, and possibly a tube of chapstick and-or vaseline. Both can be used for fire starters or a mini candle, but they can also make for a coating for a blister or nuisance wound under a duct tape band-aid.
