Hey everyone!
I tried posting this before but when it asked me to log in it deleted everything...
Okay so going for my PAL either this month(if a slot opens up) or in February. Among a 22 LR and a bolt action .308 I'm looking at 12 Gauge shotguns.
I'm looking to hunt wild turkey, but for the majority do target practice. Target practice will involve mostly slugs.
I'm keen on a tactical shotgun with a removable stock, 18 1/2 inch cylinder smooth bore barrel for several reasons.
1-Price
2-Maneuverability in the bush
3-Variation of shooting
I was looking at a MOSSBERG 500 or 590, OPTIMA Auto Tactical or Escort, and a WEATHERBY pump action. The last two don't have a removable stock, whatever.
In regards to the removable stock, yeah I don't care I want to have some fun and try the shotgun without the stock. If anyone says I'm gonna hurt myself, I did masonry for years, 235 pounds, I'm a big boy, don't worry.
So yeah, just wondering if hunting wild turkey can be done with a cylinder bore 18 1/2 inch barrel. Do I NEED a hunting shotgun with a longer, modified choke or improved cylinder to hunt wild turkey?? Any input is greatly appreciated.
Okay now I'm looking at a Stoeger P350. Apparently it comes with 5 barrels. Maybe I can get the best of both worlds in regards to the choke. Maybe I should forget about the removable stock...
Okay, bubble bursted. It seems that i will not be able to hunt anything except deer with a cylinder bore, given i have slugs. Damn. DAMN. And I was looking forward to looking so badass with that tactical shotgun. DAMN.
Apparently wild turkey requires full choke.
Well... I guess I'll pick up the stoeger P350 with the freaking five different chokes. Going for $400. Sounds like a deal. At least I'll still be able to shoot slugs as well.
Hell i should look on the bright side, I seemingly won't need the 22lr or the .308. as I'll be able to hunt deer, turkey, and whatever else. Man I can't wait to get this underway.
To learn to shoot well you need plenty of practice with something accurate. A .22 is the best place to start here. Cheap ammo and you'll pretty much have it forever, certainly the most useful firearm you'll own.
Your second could be the shotgun. In general a tactical shotgun is made for short ranges and short barrels - useless for hunting.
Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 will give you the most options for aftermarket parts, spare barrels. Unless you get a Remington or Mossberg you can pretty much forget about affordable spare barrels. At $1 per round for slugs you won't practice much.
Usually for turkey you want a 24 to 28 inch barrel, 3" chamber. Barrel with screw in chokes.
Deer? -under 75 yards you can get away with smoothbore and slugs. Beyond that, rifled barrel is better with the proper slugs.
Trigger quality is very important.
Savage makes great adjustable trigger option in a .22(most popular target bolt gun) but you can get a Ruger 10/22 (by far the most popular semi-auto) to feel good with a few aftermarket parts under $100.
Mossberg has an adjustable trigger model as well.
I have to agree.
A Remington 870, Mossberg or Clone of either is the way to go. After market furnature, spare parts, chokes, ect for them are plentiful and cheap.

Hey thanks for the reply. I can't say I didn't see this coming.
Yeah... learn to shoot with a .22LR. Ahhhhhh I know it'd be good. Personally the Mossberg Plinkster really spoke to me, and I'd probably get that one.
Yeah, you know, the main Sportsmans Store in Toronto... I swear something must be wrong with the stock information on their website, it looks like everything's out of stock. I'm gonna go for the Mossberg 500 12 Gauge with the three barrel combo(24, 24, and 28 inches). Looks good.
Thing is I need to get my @#$% together, I really want to hunt some wild turkey for Easter. I'm also looking at a 12 inch barrel 12 gauge double barrel coach gun for several reasons. One, it looks like a lot of fun, two, it's crazy defensive, three, it looks great for backpacking, which I plan on doing a lot of. Nice and compact.
So I guess I'm just gonna get this license and figure it out. Probably start with the mossberg 22LR and the shotgun, but damn I would love to get me that coach gun that is GNARLY!
18" barrel for a Mossberg 500 is about $100.
18" barrel for a Mossberg 500 is about $100.
You got all the answers eh? Thanks a lot man much appreciated. I'm unsure if I tried looking at a 18 inch barrel or not but thanks for throwing it by me anyways.
Canada ammo dot com has 12.5 inch and 8.5 inch remington clones for sale under $400. You can buy a 26 inch or longer spare barrel for all your hunting needs.
See you all after.
I don't have all the answers but I've wasted enough money on cool stuff(I mean useless stuff) that I'm trying to save you the same experience.
This way you can spend $100 instead of $300 to achieve the same result.
If you ever had to explain why you actually used the coach gun for the purpose you think you're buying it for you better have a good reason (other than self defense) why you bought it.
Pretty easy to explain away a hunting gun or "a really good deal on a Remington 870 short barrel that you thought you would get longer barrels for but it turns out it was cheaper to buy another gun with the barrels included".
FYI - Right now on CGN there are no less than 5 shotguns with 12" barrels for sale, just in the new posts alone.
Norinco pump shotguns don't have very good reviews though.
Definitely not getting the Norinco pump, only the break action. Getting the Mossberg 500 probably for the turkey shoot.
As the new gun owner is this true? Does no one buy short barreled guns like this, for fun? Honestly??? Target practice at my farm? Its kind of a kick. I've been doing it for months now. Hell, I thought it'd be hilarious.
Every time I leave the city and head to Niagara for a weekend, I bust out the recurve bow and do some target practice. Gives me a chance to relax, appreciate the land I got... while I still got it. I figured I'd do the same with the Norinco 12 gauge break action. Are people gonna a have a problem with this when I buy it?
SFRC has 14" NEA aftermarket barrels for the 870. They were on sale for $150. Pretty sure they came without bead site and probably need the chamber polished.
You can definitely do a lot of upgrades to your Ruger 10/22. But before you do, shoot the f$%k out of it. Then you can make objective decisions on whether or not each upgrade makes a difference.
Hmm, because the Remington wasn't available to be sold at the shop in Toronto i assumed Remington just didn't sell in Canada, like many other renowned american products. Glad to see I can get one in Niagara.
So which one would you guys get as a hunting shotgun? Remington or Mossberg. it looks like I might have a better time finding replacement parts with a Remington.
Okay so... haha firearms are a LOT cheaper in Niagara than in Toronto. Also much more variety. Found a Remington 870 with a 21 inch multiple choke barrel(or however you say that haha I kinda picked up on it but it comes and goes). This is EXACTLY what I'm looking for. And I'll tell you I am frothing at the mouth to go turkey hunting. I've been saying I was gonna do this for like way over five years, glad I'm finally getting around to achieve my goal.
Just to add that you can't hunt turkey with 18" barrel because you must use size 4,5 or 6 when hunting turkey. With cylinder bore that won't work. I use #4 shot with 18" barrel for rabbit. Not sure if you pick up a gun or not but you can look at winchester camp and field combo (18" and 26"). I love mine
