im with ranger on this. without proper knife training someone could beat you with a stick. its not that hard to smack someone with a pole from distance and every hit makes them more and more vulnerable and eventually you would win. the long strong stick always beats the short one.

Cigarettes are just like HedgeHogs, perfectly harmless until you put them in your mouth and light them on fire.

A knife has many uses.... defence should be close to last on the list. My 2 cents

Find someone who is into leatherwork and get them to make you a new scabbard. Better yet, learn how to make one yourself. Every skill you learn puts you that much further ahead.

Those who are unwilling to defend freedom, will become unfree.

Hi Am new to the forum and to being a prepper. Recently found out about this from another forum Survivalcache.com
They have been phenomenal in giving me advice. I want to have people that are local thats why I am here.
Have spent over 1,000 now getting gear and trying to buy it once and buy it right. I will work on developing skill.
The two knives I have purchased are the one that came in the mail today a SOG E37T-K Seal Pup Elite Kydex Sheath Black Tini Partially Serrated. I was told to get the Kydex sheath to prevent rust. Feels extremely good in the hand but I have never held a knife other than kitchen knives. I wanted the most all purpose knife possible. After SHTF situation I will probably do any type of medical assistance I can *though not skilled* I have had a hobby for over 25 years of reading everything I can and using alternative health practices. Thought this knife might come in handy.
I have ordered a Swiss Army Knife Explorer.
Was glad to see that neither were on the list of what not to b uy.
PS I am a single 56 year old female. Am thinking I may need to defend myself if things get ugly hence I focused on knives pretty early on. I dont use firearms and have purchased a slingshot which I will practice. Iknow everything can be used against me. Just trying to do my best knowing my temperment

Sherrie,

Welcome to the Forum.

New to prepping and new to knives. Before you buy any more knives I suggest you invest some of your hard earned dollars and get some training. If you lived on the Eastern side of the Rockies I would immediately suggest you see Sensei Tom at Foothills Training Services. So, lacking personal knowledge of the best instructors in the Fraser Valley, I suggest you start to visit a few schools in your area. Schools/Dojos that focus on Bujinkan or Arnis (sp) would be where I would start.

Training is more important at the beginning than the tools to use. Tools can be improvised if you are trained.

Just my 2 cents,

Mountainman.

I agree with Mountainman without training any tool you have will be almost useless to you.I've am and have been a martial artist and teacher for over twenty years and trust me without proper training edge weapons will only get you in a world of hurt when applied to self defenseless. When looking for a fix-blade knife for camping there are a number of very good opinions,Mora is one of them, and a good place to start they are small and affordable, carbon steel blade which with a faro rod will enable you to start a fire. there are a number of good sites on you tube covering bushcraft, one that I highly recommend is Dave Cantibury's Pathfinders school.and Wilderness Survival series. I personally carry no lest than five edged tools with me at all times and I train daily.Training in my way of thinking is far more important than having a pile of newly bought stuff that you have no idea how to use.Dollars spent on proper training and practice =self reliance and confidence in the end.Acquiring knowledge and training is the first step after one wakes up and starts to take responsibility for themselves and those around them.Just my opinion .Inkspot

Thanks MountainMan <3
I will google Bujinkan and Arnis
I am not looking to become an attacker as my nature is nurturer. I will defend if I have to or attack if forced to.
Appreciate the advice

My father use to tell me often, " The knife is only as good as the weilder" and "There will always be some one better than you, in a knife fight." But the best that I have heard is "walk softly and carry a big...gun" 😈

Have owned several knives of various styles & quality /// got rid of most of them when I aquired my Gerber LMF II about a year ago /// It has a full tang, glass break pommel, 1/4" thick blade that holds an edge very well, good non-slip grip (have blooded it hunting & no issue there), 5 & 1/2 blade so very manageable /// have used for everything from chopping kindling, poking the fire, carving the roast, cleaning the deer, slicing the cheese & popping blisters /// I also feel confident that it is the last knife I will ever buy /// depending on your locale & vendor it will run around $125

Hi everyone,

was in the states on the weekend and found a knife I know absolutely nothing about. what I do know is it was everything I have been looking for, the owner told me it was a SD knife. since getting home I have been unable to find out very much about it. I do know it is an SD-3036 Stainless steel knife powder coated black. the knife is very well balanced and has a really nice feel in the hands. I do not have a picture of it yet, will take some tomorrow and upload. the one site I found my knife on in the states has it advertized for $59.00 and very little else. If anyone has info please feel free to post comments.

hi,
Ok, the knife is made by Neptune Trading and the link to see the knife is: it is the S-3036
http://www.neptuneusa.net/Ecommerce/General/CategoryProductDetail.aspx?CategoryId=32&PROD_CD=S-3036

Let me know what anyone with a lot of experience rating knifes thinks. Came with a really nice Cad patch Sheath and sharpening stone.

I would recommend an Esee 3 or 4 by the tasks you are describing. I don't believe in wasting money on my essential tools so I always go with quality and warranty. You could even go with an Esee Izula and hook it to your chest strap or neck carry it. Heres a pic on two of my Esee knives.

They look nice, this store had one similar to that broad lower knife but I prefer 7" bladed knifes.
