Moira, sorry I havn't responded earlier. The two links above are a great start on OTC meds. If you do a search on this forum for OTC it will bring up various discussions on the matter too. From storage to purchase, etc.

As for medications not available to Canadians...not sure which ones specifically you are thinking about. But if they arn't okayd by Health Canada I'd be leery of using them.

I have a question... and yep, I did my homework, and nope, nothing on any of the Gov web sites.
So here it is: It is legal to import fish antibiotics
i.e. Fish Mox and Fish Pen - from the US into Canada?

Anyone with some experience on that matter?

I do have injectable Penicillin for animal use
it is easy to purchase in Canada, but again, it's the injectable form,
it is very good, but Amoxicillin in pils... much easier, no needle needed.
Of course, this is only as a very last option should SHTF, if nothing else is available...
My family prefers natural remedies, herbs, essential oils not only for us, but for our lifestock, bees, chicken and dogs as well.
And when things are bad, we get some extra help from Colloidal Silver, works really well.

You have a very good question for which I can't help with your answer. I too looked for information on this from CBSA and Health Canada and couldn't find anything. Maybe someone here has done the proverbial leap of faith and tried ordering online and could comment. I suppose that if you have a friend who is a vet, they could maybe order it for you in exchange for a case of beer? A friend of mine also picked up some antibiotics from the pharmacias in Mexico during a vacation. He said they (Cypro, amoxiciline, penicillin etc) can be bought like over the shelf medicine without prescriptions. He brought back the bottles in his bags with the lids still sealed. Coming back Ina plane full of vacationers at 2:30 am, I don't think every bags were searched and had they been, he would have just answered questions and would have surrendered the bottles if asked to do so (pleading ignorance and that they were bought during the vacation in case they got sick during a hike or something...). Maybe your best bet would be to go on the main forum and ask "any CBSA individual here to answer a question?"

Perhaps one of the larger aquarium businesses could help.

The US Government has been doing ongoing research/studies through the FDA and its called the "Shelf Life Extension Program." Some of the more recent papers are published on there website. To date, they have found some pharmaceuticals will last years and even decades with +90% potency. That being said many do not and those that do they note the conditions, and short falls of there studies that could vary those results...the research may lead rewriting expiry dates for many pharmaceuticals where they no longer need to be tossed if they exceed the current timelines.... The hesitation and second guessing we should all have is a blanket statement saying "all drugs will last way past there expiry dates." Thats dangerous imo. I think if the Physician, or Pharmacist who can speak with authority and has an expertise and advises to play by the label rules... best to play it safe and go with that.

My limited understanding here is that Health Canada is also doing similar studies. The potential for cost savings if certain drugs are found to last significantly longer (especially to Insurance companies or in Canada to public health care systems also) there is more to come out on this to the public. Everyone from "preppers' to the govt, etc. has a vested interested.

Denob, thank you for the feedback on ordering online and having no custom problems, that's good to know.

OldMan (welcome to the forum BTW!), if you or someone you know travel to Mexican resorts during the winter, a lot of our prescription meds can be purchased at their pharmacies without any prescriptions. I wouldn't try to bring back a suitcase full, but you can probably get 1-2 container(s) there. They often have 100+ pills in each container which can be 3 rounds of treatments, depending on which antibiotic you are getting. They are very inexpensive and come from the same oversea pharmaceuticals that say, Walmart, uses.

It has a fair bit of info on different types of antibiotics as well as dosage. Not being a doc, I don't want my recommendation to be misconstrued as medical advice, but I would consider getting amoxicillin, cipro and doxycycline. That would seemingly cover a variety of problems. I would suggest printing that post and keeping a copy as reference.

Also, don't forget stocking up on regular over-the-counter medicines:
Cough suppressant syrup
Expectorant syrup
Pseudo ephedrine (Sudafed)
Pain control (Advil, Motrin, Tylenol, anyone you like as well as stronger muscle relaxant such as Robaxacet)
Nausea medicine (Gravol)
Both anti-diarrhea and laxative, especially important as your diet may change
Eye and ear antibiotic (one is made by polysporin, it burns like heck for an eye infection, but it works)
Antibiotic ointment for small wounds (Polysporin)
Multivitamins (again, your diet may change and you may be lacking some essentials. You can probably stretch the dose as each tabs usually has much more than needed and the body can't process it all anyway)
If someone tends to suffer from allergies, you may want to stock up on those meds too.

Just got home from work.Thanks,Ill check that site out and do some ordering.Went threw the first aid room at work and got the brain working again.I held a level 3 for 14 years but I haven't renewed it for 8 years as I'm not paid for holding one anymore.Been spending the last year building ( what I think)are some logical rifle choices and don't see room for improvement in that area anymore so am looking forward to the medical area now.Ive also spent the summer looking at cabins/cottages and am going to look at another one this weekend.My criteria are well of paved roads,"smaller communities"300ish.Also,200ish miles from where I live so it can be used as a holiday weekend place too.Also close enough to WALK to barefoot if I had too,lol.Im very lucky to live in central BC where all 4 directions have possibilities.Best of all,huge buffer between me and Vancouver.I think preppers living there are ALOT braver then me.Getting out of there to anywhere I would consider safe,would be a challenge.I also think our two islands on the west coast would be a good spot for prepping as it has the water buffer.Oh well,I am thankful for my area and will get a spot eventually.

I ended up building two first aid kits,one medical and one dental.I think my medical kit is finished,even have a large supply of antibiotics.My issue is the dental kit.I have two books, temp and permanent filling materials,and even various dental tools,but I cant seem to get anywhere with painkillers(if you had to scrape a tooth to clean it before applying filling material)or god forbid,pull a broken tooth.Ive watched video online of teeth being pulled without freezing(scary!).There has to be a product I can buy to reduce pain of grid down dental repair,lol.

I have been doing some research on allergies. I am extremely allergic to any type of stinging insect and now have to carry an epi pen with me at all times.

So I have two questions I could not find answers for;

First, I have an expired epi pen. Should I keep it and store it, is it still good?

Is there any herbal substitute for the epi pen if push came to shove?
