Like many of you, I've had some up close and personal experiences with suicide. Suicide is such a horrible experience, and yesterday another good man who had done so much for others, including troops, has commited suicide. If we can persuade them to stay in the game, to have hope for better moments, then we've succeeded. But in the end, no one can stop someone from commiting suicide. All those involved, those mentally ill and those loving and supporting them, deserve our help and our prayers.

My son had suicidal thoughts this year. He wasn't alone. He was part of a group at school who were glorifying the act. Over a span of months, he began to believe that he wanted to do it. You can't imagine the stress of suicide watch in your house until you've experienced it. I couldn't sleep, we agonized over every noise in the night, the stress was emotionally, mentally and physically opressinve. After therapy and much social monitoring he has found his happy place again. I still never know if he will regress. I just have to hope and pray he has learned better coping skills to recogniae and avoid destructive relationships and behaviours. As a parent, I hope he makes it through his teenage years happy and healthy. Puts a lot into perspective.
Thank you Plain Jane! I feel the same way!!
Underprepared, thank you so much for sharing your extremely close experience with suicide. I will pray your son and your family. Thank goodness he has your family, but what a nightmare for all involved! You are doing all the right things, and when mental illness is recognized and treated right away, the risk of relapse goes way down.
