I was just thinking that salt licks for deer may be a good prep item for a long term bug out kit or at the BOL.
If you have a place already, I would be inclined to set out licks now and watch for activity then keep replacing the ones that get visited.

Hi Denob,

I think that having extra blocks of salt stored (both different mineral kinds for the critters and a good amount of plain white salt) is a excellent idea, just check your local regs,as I am on a farm and have farm critters, I have salt blocks out etc, but in my dad's neck of the woods, even though he has the land and if he had even one farm animal, he would be fine, because it does not have any, putting out salt blocks is considered a wild life draw, and is illigal in his neck of the woods, now clearly, you can put it out into bush or the right spot so that folks are not going to see it unless they go looking for it and in the case of a SHTF, that won't matter at all but for here and now, worth checking out your local country regs on if you can put out the salt licks..

I have on hand 3 bags of untreated road salt, for various reasons. 1) it is the cheapest salts on the market, 2) I use it for defrosting stuff that I have vac-sealed (immersed in salted water, 10 min), 3) most obvious, road salt 4) you can use it on hides. If you want to purify it, dump it in a pail of water, (and boil if you want, I usually set it in the sun) until its saturated (when the salt wont dissolve any more), and pour it on a contained plastic sheet in the sun until it solidifies again. **Don’t pour out the grit at the bottom of pail**. P.S. Road salt in the grass is hard to detect, except for wildlife.

We have a salt block sitting on a stump about 50 yards out from the cabin. Almost every morning when we get up, there are around half a dozen deer in the yard. Sometimes it's tempting but they're what you might call my food storage on the hoof. Of course, it's nice to see them in the yard. We also keep several blocks in storage, just in case. The different coloured blocks provide different nutrients, I think the blue are rich in potassium and the red are rich in cobalt.

We did much the same thing when I was younger at our country house. We set a salt block on a stump just across the river and the deer got used to it being there. There were often deer eating the stump in the early morning and late evening. I guess my idea of salt blocks is much the same...food storage on hoofs.

Now if you have a few Oak/ nut trees, you'd have you share of furried tailed tree rats also. That salt also attracts porcupines, and they will nibble your axe handle for salt, but their good eating also.

I didn't realize that they would chew the axe handle, but I guess it makes sense. I also didn't think we had them around here, but I've been seeing a few on the side of the road lately...although they have all been "past stew pot" quality.

The vile beasts love plywood anywhere they can find it, they'll chew tires and trailer wiring that have been on the road in the winter for the salt. Plastic car trim...wheelbarrow handles and tires.... anything. I've been waging a battle for years with them and have a designated rifle(.22 over .410) with flashlight always ready to go. My ear is tuned to their scrunch scrunch gnawing. Hate them with a passion.

I'm probably the only guy that never has any kind of success with blocks. I've even placed them 10' from a deer trail from one feed ground to another and it didn't get used.

I do have great deer and turkey retention on my property by planting for just them. I throw out some beet and pumpkin seeds, sometimes corn, sometimes some wheat in the back of farm. About a third of an acre (I can't do anything with it anyway). I get them moving from a water source to a bedding area, so I feed them and they keep coming back. I have some oaks and a big hazelnut tree on the property too...and they bring the turkeys around. My turkey flock is up to about 30 now.
Might be worth more to you to just toss some seed and leave it alone. Been working for me for the last 5 years or so. I think it's better to make your own seed mix too. I looked at the Deer plot mixes you can buy, and most of it to me was annual plants. I prefer perennial myself, then I don't have to keep fussing with it.

Not only are you going to show your appreciation of a stylish cheap android tablet cover by choosing the right design, material and color, but it can also be an expression of your own personality like in case of blackberry skins cell phone. If you want to come across as a Barbie, you could get a android 4.0 tablet skin in pink with pretty feminine and lacy designs on it. Remember that choosing a cell phone skin, which puts people off is definitely not a good choice when you are interested in making friends and impressing people. On the other hand, it should say, "I have style, I have taste, I might not be able to understand art, but I know what I like, and I can afford to buy the best!" Young men might want to go in for cheap tablets skins, which depict sports.
