Just a little note.I hope everybody knows what sour milk is.(not butter milk) You can not get it (make it) from the milk from store just by letting it sit for along time.Milk from store do not get sour it gets spoiled.

I would like to see that egg yolk method. I've heard of the willow bark but willow is scarce where I'll be. If you'd like a coyote hide to try I can certainly get one too you....I hunt them all year round.
Hi, I would indeed be interested in a coyote hide, I will PM you to see if we can figure something out in terms of how to get one to me.
PVC tube with end caps in place, no odour, no fuss no muss and low cost. Another option would be to go to the Dollar store, get one of those large plastic bags, put the pelt in there then vacuum the bag, air lock bag. Can not remember what they are called, but like food sealer bags only huge! Then put it in another plastic bag and tape it shut, just in case!

so? you need to get real milk from the dairy farm then let it sour? No additives and no heating pasteurization of the milk prior to you letting it sour?

So henry would it be clabber then that I was looking for, or even more sour then that?

Milk from dairy farm let sit in a room temperature for couple of days.On the top of milk you get layer of sour cream. You collect that and if you have more of it you can make butter by whipping it .(now you have butter and butter milk) After taking the sour cream you are left with beautiful clamps of sour milk.
To make it from store bought milk you buy organic 3.8% milk , warm it up (appr.70F) and whip in (in 4l) 1 cup of bought sour cream.Let it stand in glass container for 24 hr in room temperature.
The sour milk we drink instead of yogurt.

Got my cow hide back, and wow did they ever do a great job on it, have not found a single tear or cut in, and when they said they would give it back whole, boy did they mean whole, came back with the head skinned and attached, as well as the tail minus the bone, its a beautiful hide, but wow, It was super heavy, both green and wet, and so had to call in help to get it up on top of the chain link wall while it drips and tomorrow, I will measure it and knock together its drying board and then they will come over and help me get it stretched out and ready to start working on.
Planning on trimming parts off the head skin (no way can DH handle seeing some of those parts, but I figure if I tan out the best part of his curled top and then cut it in the round, it will make a very cute trim for something, and for the tail, I am not sure but was thinking I might use the part that they cut open to get the tail bone out, put a stick in, wrap it and see if I can dried it into a kinda fly shooer.. Or I am open to idea's??

I asked my native grandmother to explain as best as possible how they used to tan hides back in the day. She doesn't remember to much and all. but says they used to save a villages pee in large amounts to tan hides and after soaking for days would be cleaned off in a river. it turned the hides soft and made them easy to work with for clothing and such. I wish I knew more about the process and will keep asking around. I would love to find someone that still remembers the whole process.
Never underestimate the power of free! If someone has deemed something valueless, yet U see value in it; Then you've already made a profit and savings!

the rabbit hide's are coming along nicely.. Sadly had a new lamb pass away, so now I have a lovely little lamb hide to do as well as the yearling beef hide..
I cut off the head part and trimmed it up and sewed the eye holes together and am working that as a single peice, I want to cure it, and then cut it for trim use..

Figured you might be interested in seeing the finished rabbit hide project, still need to find the right toggle but otherwise, its all done.. Ideally I want to find or make a small bone toggle that will go though the loop and turn to keep the top closed.
So for those that were also working hides, how are your projects coming along.. the lamb hide is done as well but I still need to figure what to do with it yet..

Thanks DogLover,
The beef hide has been a huge learning curve, because its been a lession in what can go both wrong and right trying to work a large hide in the dead of winter, with temps that are bouncing from minus 30 to plus 11 in a three week span.. What did you do with your goat hides?

Haven't really decided, my daughters were using them for rugs but with a new puppy that likes to chew everything in site I had to put them into storage for a while.

Hi, I've been researching tanning for quite a while. I found a few good sources on brain tanning with the animal's hair on for small hides.
