As a former resident of North Vancouver, and having lived in a number of locations across Canada, I personally don't think you will find a better place to live ... even with the cost of living in the Lower mainland of BC.
I would suggest you start posting in the BC forum on here. Make yourself known to others in that specific region.
Preppersaurus, a friend of mine, lives in the lower mainland outside of Vancouver. He has organized a number of meet-ups in the past. Maybe you will be able to meet up with him and others in the region. Heck, maybe if you're at one of those meetings when I vacation to BC coast and lower mainland next year, we might even meet up.

I second gPRS' suggestion. The more you contribute of your own experience , the more you may be known , trusted and welcomed into a community.
Welcome fellow ex pat! Unload your brain within the forum ( it's a safe circle), ask questions, join in. Easy as pie. There are meet ups posted and here on the island you are only a couple of hours away if you want to join our events.
Thanks to everyone who has posted here, we will try to get to some meetings next year as we feel this is an important group to be part of. Apart from meeting folks and contributing where ever we can, its a great place to understand the prepping needs and requirements of the area. Thanks again and hope to meet some of you guys in the near future.
