Track down your local bird sales, and see who is selling the breeds you are interested in and then talk to them and get contact info, Birds shows at your local fair is a good way to go as well.. again, talk to the breeders, they will know who has "farm" birds of that breed, or they might be willing to part with less then perfect show birds at a good price.

I agree with farmgal... Kijiji and craigslist or local farm market sites will likely have what you are looking for.. I just traded 6 speckled to a prepper friend.. BC is to far away to offer help.. Sorry... At the same time thru Kijiji I purchased a roo and 5 Jersey Giants.. They are a duel purpose US heritage breed. We are hoping use them for eggs for a season and then put them in the freezer in the fall? Does anyone here have experience with these birds? Thanks

I've gotten birds of many kinds from kijiji with mixed results. When I was a newbie I didn't always know what to look for when choosing a healthy bird. I've ended up with sick birds, two roosters whose sole purpose in life was to injure or kill me (we ate them) and some really great birds too. If you don't know much about chickens - take someone with you and be prepared to walk away if you see something you don't like.

I have also had mixed results with Kijiji but I keep trying (and learning).

Good: I found a trio of Chantecler chickens near me and made the purchase. (A racoon ate the rooster before I got chicks.)

Bad: I travelled 100kms for a replacement rooster from a very nice lady who also traveled to meet with me despite health issues. The rooster was not even close to being a Chantecler. I felt bad for her so I gave her the $10 for the bird and then gave it to a neighbour.

Bad: I bought several Chantecler chicks from a guy who swore they were pure. Two turned out ok but the rest were of various other breeds.

Good: I bought fertilized eggs from a known breeder and hatched them out in my own incubator (which I bought on Kijiji).

If I need something, I place an ad - it's surprising what's out there.

True enough Lee Enfield. The worst are chicks. We bought a batch of 25 "Rouen" ducklings at auction last year, 1 was a female Rouen, and the other 24 were Blue/Black Swedish.

Picked up this new to me breed of chicken today at my local annual bird sale, this breeder is not going for the show but for keeping the meat/egg properties and I have high hopes that I will really enjoy adding this breed to my flock.. I also got a huge! blue spash Jersery Giant Roo, to add some extra size for the offspring that will be raised and butchered out this fall.

Anyone interested in Heritage breed chickens in Alberta. I can PM you on a private seller. I have gotten all my chicks from her south of Calgary. She has quite a few different breeds and is wonderful to deal with. Healthy birds!

I have chanteclers as my main flock. I am developing some ameraucana, copper maran and cuckoo malines. The available stock is terrible, so it takes me a few years to breed them up into decent birds. I will be crossing the malines with Cx and then breeding back to the chanteclers for a good meat bird that lays eggs. I hatch my own chicks in order to increase the odds of good results.

Just a list of the chicks I bought last spring. Buff, dark and light brahma. Copper maran , black Langshan and partridge Cochins. My contact had many others, but these were the birds I was interested in. My favorites are the brahma's. Their all doing well and today I celebrated my first egg- while underwhelming in size, they promise they"ll get bigger. I'm looking forward to having my own daily supply of fresh eggs!

We use barred rocks, copper marans, australorps, and my personal fave: Bielefelders.

BF'ers are the ultimate prepper breed. You can determine sex on day one, by sight. Helpful if you want to segregate meat birds from layers. They are good Winter layers, cold hardy. Quiet!! Dual purpose, nice personality. Hard to find, but worth the effort. Give them a Google!!
