I found a small device on ebay that you plug into your smart phone that detects and counts radiation. Has anyone checked them out? I was shopping for a geiger counter.

Doug, I'm not in a market, but reading the reviews at the bottom of the link you provide, I'm skeptical.

I think your right. The review on the Chinese one is better.

This one looks better https://www.amazon.ca/Geiger-Counter-Detector-Smartphone-Android/dp/B01AMAT29M/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1493207798&sr=8-6&keywords=geiger+counter
Small enough for an EDC, but could be used as a remote in a shelter.

Best reading on high range meters http://radmeters4u.com/ The small ones for your phone will detect low levels of radiation around you.

Does anyone know if these detectors pass scientific muster?..have any been tested by reputable organizations?

Odds are we would all be dead unless your outside the main area. Rule of thumb is stay away from big city's. Fall out sucks and maybe they might help. But odds are before they warn you. You have a bad cause of radiation. At least from my research on most shit you buy. Better just to suit up and over kill. Better safe than sorry. Me personally its bbq time and beer. Might as well go out with a bang

I cant say for sure as I have no personal experiences with such devices, but I do have a friend who bought a detector about a year ago. I do remember him telling me at the time that he had to spend 4 figures to get a dedicated device that he had measurement confidence in.
Myself, I have a very good understanding of what will happen to the northern hemisphere under conditions precipitating fall out concerns.
Ill break out the good bottles of rhubarb wine and self medicate as necessary.

http://www.staradvertiser.com/2017/07/20/breaking-news/state-to-roll-out-plan-on-how-to-deal-with-north-korean-nuke/ Fallout from any use of a nuclear weapon could be a problem. It is not my plan to die from something avoidable. From what I've read, dying from radiation sickness is slow and nasty.
