A good example of why the bare minimum you should have ready to go at all times is a clean change of clothes, some money and copies of your important paperwork (ID, insurance etc)
I spent the night unexpectedly in a hotel. Looks like I can go back home today after work, as I lived a wee bit too close to this for comfort. Mine or the police's apparently. I didn't stick around to watch the end of it after they knocked on my door and requested we clear out, as I had to be up early this morning. A quick check when I woke up assured me my house was still standing, otherwise, well, I wouldn't be at work, I'd be dealing with that.

It's good (for some values of good) to be reminded occasionally that emergencies come in all sorts of flavours, not just the Death of Civilization or the End of the World varieties. Spent last night tweaking the go bag for a few other civilized amenities. Like real toothpaste.
