Hi there!
I posted in "General Discussion" but upon a little poking around, I'm not certain how active this forum is anymore and I'm trying to cast my net wide - so here I go!
My husband and I have two small kidlets. We're in the process of looking for land to buy no more than 2-3 hours from Toronto for the purposes of building a hobby farm (with plans for building a shelter/bunker). We were hoping to find like-minded people who may be interested in forming a community. Yes, I know, I've seen posts like this here, but there doesn't seem to be anything concrete that ever took shape. Or if it did, I'm missing it. In any event, we'd love to be close to a community of people, or find like-minded individuals who may be interested in buying land near to each other. My other post in General Discussion has more detail. Basically right now, we're looking for land recommendations. Where would you buy? What area of the province would you recommend that isn't a terrible driving distance for weekend commutes?
Really interested in meeting other families - people with small kids. I hope some of you will reach out 🙂
Best,

Have you looked at peterbourgh area? Guessing anything west of there would be very pricy and congested for a setup as you mention / more privacy, game, water... push east along 401 some more and you can get above Kingston and Frontenac country. Tons of small shallow lakes, trails for atv, sledding, lots of hunting and cottagers are less yuppie
Cheers and keep us informed.
Welcome to the form, you have a great game plan in mind, best of luck in bringing it together and I would love if you could keep in touch here on the board on how things go.. I know that there will be bumps in the road to make those kind of connections

I have looked at the Peterborough area - it actually has some beautiful properties. I'm a LITTLE concerned about privacy though, everyone seems a bit too close to each other, or the surrounding areas don't seem amenable to hunting/trapping. Do you have any particular area that that you think you'd recommend?

Thank you so much for your message 🙂 I appreciate the feedback. I don't believe in a zombie apocalypse or anything of the like. I am trying to be pragmatic - I DO believe that there is a very real possibility of some danger that would necessitate getting out of the city to safety. A pandemic could happen any time, which is what I'm most concerned about. When you have kids, you do anything in your power to protect them.
I also believe that if there is some incident or something that requires staying off the grid for the long term, then you can't make it without the help or support of other people. Farming isn't a two-man job. Building isn't a two-man job (for the most part). It really DOES take a village. That's why I'm hoping to find people who have been thinking about going for a piece of land, and hopefully I can connect with people who may want to buy in the same area to stay close and connected. It would also be so much fun to do this with others too. I love prepping and find it enjoyable. Learning about survival skills, farming, homesteading - I find it really enjoyable and it actually makes me feel peaceful. Weird, I know 😉 It would be great for our kids to play with other kids on the weekend while we work on the property.
I did receive a lovely message here from someone named Protector. Unfortunately the mailbox here doesn't allow me to respond. If you could do me a favor, in case they don't see this, and email them from here for me as ask to send a message to me at(removed the email address) I'd be extremely grateful.
Thank you so much 🙂
I'm not sure why my email address keeps getting removed? Is it automatically edited out? Let's try it this way: Juliepreps at gmail dot com

Julie. No spot in particular. I was trying to stay focued on your range, then I considered price of land and less congestion. All in that order. A google map look of north east of peterbourh area shows some conservation land, rivers and some lakes, mainly farm land. As far as privacy goes, unless your headed way up north, your going to bump into people every mile or so in eastern ontario and that’s on the private side. It’s who your neighbours are that is important to me. Most of mine are decent folk but there are those I would expect issues with.
go for a few recon visits and make a point of popping into as many little restaurents’s as your tummy or bladder can handle, drop into gas station for a candy Bar, hardware stores for a chat with folks about what land may be for sale ( not even listed) etc. Get a feel for the what locals are like. Look for trouble spot bars as well and see what creatures are hanging out there. Are they just low life’s or more on the mean side?

That's excellent advice 🙂 I'll probably do something like that. A country drive isn't a bad idea anyway 😉 Cheers!

Please keep us informed. There’s a person here who was looking for someone near Kingston
