Hello!
I'm looking forward to connecting with fellow islanders who wonder about our fate when disaster strikes…I'm sure the Island will have to be self-sufficient for awhile. We probably won't be able to move too far with one major north-south highway and the inability of ferries to help us much…Do you find you prepare any differently with those parameters in mind?

Cheers!

Hi cedarbase and welcome aboard

There are quite a few "enlightened " people on the island now and for the most part, overall self sufficiency is key. I know, if it's "The BIG one" that the island will most likely slide under the plate and there's not really much preparing you can do for that. My biggest worry is the economy. Having been through illness and reduced incomes, that scares me more than anything else.

The big one as far as a mega quake of 9 or so would likely be a movement of maybe a meter or two ? And if my understanding of plate tectonics is correct , the pacific plate is sliding under the continental plate is it not ? The plate juncture is about 200 miles from Vancouver Island running parallel in the pacific ocean . That is what buckles the mountain ridgelines of the island , the south coast and eventually the rockies if I understand correctly . While prepping for megaquake is a good idea , I would worry more about damages and a tsunami hitting the west coast of the island than the island sliding into the ocean .

Hi Cederbase. Welcome to the forums! We have a great little group here and we have fun getting together for meet ups.
I too share your concern, it's what got me into prepping in the first place. Yes if we got a quake like the area got 314 years ago we have to be prepared to have no fresh supplies for weeks. Roads, ferry terminals, and airports would be damaged. So food, water and warmth is key.
Great to have another islander!
