Hi All;
I have cruised this site a few times because of a friend who is very interested in this type of life lessons, and due to my military, police, and life experience I have no doubt at all about chaos and how quickly things can happen. You can't beat the old adage "Knowledge is Power". I am a hunter and outdoorsman but a little different than most, small game and daily meals living off the land sort of guy instead, sling shot hunting, bow, small caliber (22LR)' fishing and gathering sort of guy.
I'm a lot older now than I am younger but maybe I can pass on some knowledge and it might help some one a long the line.
Thanks for letting me hang out.
Oh and if you care the invite came from Knuckle so you can blame him or thank him up too you.

The idea of sling shot hunting appeals to me. I have done some trapping, and have dealt with small game, but an urban dweller I don't get enough practice. I would think that the same hand eye coordination as archery would apply? What type of stone/rock/ammo so to say would you use? Is it effective? Do you know what the laws are in Ontario regarding sling shots. Is this something I could practice in my back yard or not really? I find the whole idea of it ideal for an urban prepper.
2nd question: Bushcraft. How does one really learn? Again I have some basics from hunting with family but I want to learn how to feed my kids when others just see trees. I am learning medicinal and edible plants for Ontario, but there is so much more. Thoughts? Books? Courses even?
Thanks and welcome RATTS

Ok I guess it could be a big thing, (sling shot hunting), there are lots of U-tube vids on the net. I myself use a simple can tire slingshot for birds of the pigeon, or rock-dove class. Ever heard of pigeon under glass? As for game birds aka the ring neck (Yummy) pheasant or partridge and grouse or prairie chickens I like a heavier sling like a black widow or the Saunders falcon with replacement black bands, they are about 30 pounds draw weight at my arm length 28" pull. I have asked around Alberta fish and wildlife and game hunters no one knows if they are illegal for hunting game birds you would get tags for in the regular season. Everyone I have spoken too states that if I was using them to hunt for a meal they would seriously look the other way. The ammo I use can be purchased almost anywhere glass marbles or 1/4 inch steel balls. I do prefer the steel balls as the have a much faster flight speed an less drop.
As for learning a pop can on a string hanging is ideal, start close an then move out to a distance you think is still in the kill distance. And for hunting well that is discretionary, by that I mean I hunt when I take the dogs out for a walk, always have the sling on me somewhere tucked away. No One yet has seemed to wonder or call when I have smoked noisy magpie.
The other option is a thing called a sling bow, (Slingshot that shoots arrows) might be good for rabbits but anything smaller and I am certain a head shot at proper range will kill it.
As for books or lessons, all I can say is use your mind and get out an try stuff, best way to learn is be hungry and have to trap or hunt for lunch.
Hope this gives you some info, I'm experimenting with the sling bow and a whisker biscuit but that's for another day.
Thanks Ratts. I am going to add that to my list of things to get. With two boys its also something I can teach them that is socially acceptable. 🙂 Its something I definitely will try out before next spring when I go out with my family. Thanks.
The sling bow concept?
Well I have completed and tried out the sling bow for about three weeks now. I'm not impressed. The arrows have to be carbon fiber and light weight, the distances with store bought bands are minimal to say the least. the arrow drop is extreme for my kind of hunting. Would it be practical, not in my books but maybe for grouse and squirrels the animals you can get real close to sure.
The videos on utube that show people hunting moderate size animals, pigs, Sitka deer, and such are possible. But most of them are using bands you get for spear fishing under water, they must be around 50 pounds of pull weight to do any real serious damage hunting a larger animal.
This is not something I would try, I have been taught and stand by the fact kill the animal quickly and with out it suffering any more than it has too.
Good Hunting.
