Many of those bikes seem very unbalanced and thus only safe at slow speeds. The agility required to get onto the top of that load without affecting the operators balance would have been worth the watch as they started out. I had 2 girls on behind me one time and their constant contradictory movements made us come close to dumping a few times even though they were directly behind me...mind you I was mostly riding atop the gas tank and we all had much to drink..... but it was a dare that had to be done. 😆
I have driven both trikes and bikes with sidecars. Neither are fun to drive compared to 2 wheels as once leaning is taken away, you essentially have a bad handling car. The sidecar requires you to understand that to do a left turn, you must accelerate into the corner and in a right turn you must decelerate. Otherwise the bike will try to go straight instead as gravity promotes this motion further. This is a hard lesson for those with many years of bike riding behind them as since it feels that your on a bike, so you assume that it should therefore handle like a bike.
But it seems that with this interlude, we have given time to the author to have written a whole book by now 😆 . So C5, how's the writing going?
15000 words typed so far and I am way ahead of that on paper
yah. Ive done the two girl thing as well but it was to get them up a logging road to their cabin on the mountain. I regularly used the bike to move firewood from the beach to my camp. Survival Bike rule here. If it has a bitch seat (my previous called it that) it means the bike was designed to carry a lot of extra weight. Even more if you drive slow. We just have to lose the high speed and long distances world view. The world is about to get a lot smaller
Ive got another seasons greetings here I read recently that I want to pass along http://www.resilience.org/stories/2014-12-25/waiting-for-the-sunrise
Its from another smart guy , like Dmitry Orlov , that keeps popping up in assorted places and has a pretty good reputation in a lot of circles. Worth keeping an eye on. A darn good writer. So far, Ive never read anything from him I disagree with. That's new.
I have a Tactical Harness and I have a Tool Belt. The Tool Belt is more Useful.
Well those trikes are around 15-30 mph in speed but goes quite a long distance plus can enter the alleys between buildings where sometimes not big enough for cars. Tried one of those long time ago also for firewood and the feature that surprised me is a reverse gear. It is not too fast but the platform is so interesting, might even be loaded with .50 cal.
I remember the owner said that if a bike or car claims to have so much horsepower, the way to test it is to drag some cart or wagon. 😀
Regret comes last, if it comes early its called registration!
In the end, only fellow preppers truly respects other preppers.
When nothing happens, the world will laugh at you.
When SHTF, what will happen when they found out you got supplies?
Geometry is never critical at slower speeds and therefore COG (center of gravity) isn't critical unless they turn when traveling too fast. You can see that many of those are very top heavy and this is what makes them dangerous. I doubt many countries worry about lawsuits and it's ride at your own risk mentality. Even though the Harley trike I drove had a differential to allow for better turning, the mass still showed it wasn't going to corner like a bike but rather like a car instead as the lack of leaning produces this aspect.
The standard transmission allows for more payload per horsepower compared to an automatic, but clutches still slip when overloaded and burn themselves out too. I don't see these trikes more useful than say a small truck as the 4x4 aspect would be of better use in to many ways as fuel economy is gone once the payload increases. How about a motorcycle pulling a trailer instead? Is this not 1/2 way in between the and speed would then be decent unless the loads were too big. The trails could then be less traveled as long as the trailers' wheels were larger diameter of course.
