Hello, so your Doom and Gloom as well are you? well, welcome then to the same group!
although,
I prefer to think cheerfull and sunny, glass half full, with my preps half full 🙂 Better to be sitting in knowledge and thought than 6ft down or in an emergency line for FEMA
Just wondering when the next time you guys/gals are getting together for coffee?
Is there any chance that some of the technical things that are covered in your get-togethers (ie making lamps/stoves etc etc) could be recorded for those of us who can't make it to any meetings?? I'm sure I'm not the only one interested in what you are "getting up to" during these meetings - there is nothing here like your meetings, so I have to surf the net to find what I'm looking for.

Susannah, why not pop on over?
Actually I have been thinking of recording and publishing the info, setting it up now and thanks for the reminder.
Wilderness Return, Hang on ...puff, puff...I'm just blowing up my water wings!! Seriously, It would be really good if you could do the recording and publishing thing 'cos I feel kinda like the mushroom on the other side of the tree! (I can hear whats going on but I can"t see it) I'm learning so much from all of the people on this forum and I know I've got a long way to go - however, on the up side, I'm also enjoying the journey!

So I thought I'd pop in and say hello! New to the site, I'm in Durham (Oshawa) and just starting to prepp. I 36, have a huge amount of "survival" training, Own some land up north as my "bug to" location.
I've decided it's time to start getting serious about having a plan and preparedness going. I'm the one constantly telling people that "luck favours the prepared" so I'd better get prepared. I've always kinda not worried too much as I am pretty resourceful, and I have always thought in an "society meltdown" I would just vanish into the woods and live off the land. But I'm really starting to think I should plan a lot better..... Being self sufficient is one thing, but being efficient enough that I can take care of my son and my wifey, is something I think might stress my limits on capabilities. Also, a plan, just feels like the right thing.
So, hello all, and if anyone can let me know where the "main" room to chat and hear more I'd really appreciate it.
Hello and Welcome Doughy,
there is no main chat room, if you look up to the left top, see the Portal
click on it, there you will find other tools
you can see latest posts,
click on new posts
click on unread posts
THE Moderator is working on a chat program, this board does not have that feature
Welcome Doughy,
No, we do not yet have a chat room, but we may in the future.
It sounds like you have a real advantage over a lot of other people in the fact that you own remote property.
Personally, I would first look at building a permanent shelter there, even an old shipping container would work.
I think shelter is the first step to a bug out location. If you need to get outta dodge in the winter, then a roof to go to would be a huge advantage.
Glad to see you here and hope to hear from you often.
So has anything changed or are these meetings still every month? Just curious as its local for me and i would like to get around to meeting people in person and learning new things!
Desro,
the monthly meets that I helped my buddy host are no more.
He shut down his business and they had a kid, for reasons of my own and for control reasons, I decided to not go forward with the monthly meets anymore.
Things are up in the air right now, at his business there was a good spot to meet up, now it is more complicated as I have a mobile business so I do not have a location.
I might just make a coffee shop meeting soon though.
How much notice do people like? 1 week, 2 weeks, couple of days?
I am thinking how about this Sunday or Saturday afternoon, is that long enough notice?
at a coffee shop - NOT TIMS.. gosh.. way to busy there among other reasons

Hi and thanks !
I guess I shoulda given a couple more details on my " Bug to" spot. but then again, I don't want to give too much.. 😉 It is my cottage, located in the middle of nowhere. It's not the typical cottage location in the sense of population, or ease of access. There is maybe 7 cottages on the lake that is 36 miles end to end. Its a 40 minute drive to the nearest paved road and unless you have a serious snow machine, you're in for a lovely winter walk.... :geek:
I do have a small "A" frame cabin on it, with a 1GW propane generator that I can run everything off. I have wired it up to my tool room complete with lots of metal stock, welders and so on. ( I used to be a mech/chem engineer-family biz) I have solar power as well, complete with battery bank. It's an excellent location as its on a smaller lake that's not connected by any canals or passable waterways. My lake is also actually spring fed, as are many in the Canadian Shield. I think the biggest draw about my place is the remote location and it's proximity to a massive amount of crown land that's all forest and rocks (Canadian Shield) without any real populated city, town or anything. My bug to location did have to serve double duty as a cottage or retreat from city but I did choose it wisely with the idea in mind I might have to spend a long time there in case of a SHTF situation. So things that I felt where important, was water access and wildlife. I used to do a lot of camping, canoeing trips that consisted of bringing no food and only eating what I catch. It was a lot of fun when I was younger and so recently I have started to revive my survival training to keep them fresh...
So, I guess my next set of questions would be,
1. Does anyone think that a SHTF situation is imminent in the next little bit??
2. What do you think will bring on a SHTF situation?
3. When?
I'm one of the people that isn't afraid of some natural crazy event happening on December 21,2012, but I am afraid of people that will make something happen due to their own fanatical beliefs. And the only other thing that has me really concerned is solar flares, but there's not really a way to predict them, it's going to happen whenever it does.
My short answer would be no. Although you may have to define "little bit". Never hurts to be prepared though!
Welcome Doughy76 - there is a meeting scheduled in August at Richters Herbs.

I am from Durham Region as well and I am very new to this dooms day prep stuff but any tips, advice etc would be greatly appreicated! I live in an apartment building 🙁 (with my husband and 2 children) but I would like to be prepared! I saw an episode of of Doomsday preppers tonight and there was a family that made their own diseasel and lived off 2 bucks a day per person which blew my mind away
Anyways,if anyone has any ideas on how I can utilize my apartment, and how to start prepping because I haven't started and would like to get started but don't know where to start? Thank you Sara
