So after lots of looking around I decided to go with a Ruger 10/22, picked up a used All weather model with black synthetic stock and a stainless barrel. Now the question I had is if anyone has any recommendations for a good ammo? I will be taking it out in a week to go test it so dont want to waste my money on crap ammo..
thanks 😀
I've never had any issues with Blazer ammo (I think its made by CCI) good price too, at least out here in BC

I was going to buy one until my friend let me fire his...it was too small for my hand.

Just about every rifle is going to shoot best with different ammo.
I shoot regularly in an informal league and have tried everything I could that was less than $100 a brick (500 rounds). My particular 10/22 likes RWS Target Rifle at $47 a brick. Groups are about half the size of bulk Federal or the like.
Guy who shoots with me has the same rifle, his does best with RWS Club at about the same price.
You'll just have to buy a box of everything and try it. Keep records or pics of your best groups under similar conditions and eventually you'll find the best or at least weed out the worst.
Remington and Winchester ammo shall never again pass through my barrel.
Just about any retailer is going to carry your low end ammo. For better stuff I usually go to http://www.targetshootingproducts.com/
I shoot blazer and it works great in my gun so well in fact I bought a bunch of it in bulk 5200 rounds for $200.
IMHO there is no "crap" ammo these days. It is all reliable and will get the job done within the limitations of the rifle. That said it IS true that some are better than others and each rifle likes to be fed different ammo. I shoot Winchester in mine. Also it would be a good idea to try some subsonic .22 at short ranged.. say within 50 ft. It is excellent for small game and is MUCH quieter than regular or high velocity rds.
Hey grouchyprepper , does the CCI ammo pack a bit more punch than any others??

CCI stingers travel at 1640 ft/sec
CCI velocitors travel at 1435 ft/sec
CCI mini mags travel at 1235 ft/sec
Winchester 36 grain hp travel at 1280 ft/sec
these specs are off the box
great info thanks everone! Think I may try some of that blazer ammo... Among many others i am sure!
I seem to recall someone doing water resistance tests on .22 ammo. Submerged for a time. CCI was the only factory ammo that was unaffected.
I first got a .22 when I was 12 years old. All I ever used in it was long rifle hollow points. I never paid any attention to the brand and it never made any difference. Because it was a .22, I never shot at anything more that a hundred yards. Muzzle velocity didn't matter, all I knew was that my target couldn't outrun it and all I cared about was that it would do what it was supposed to do when it arrived at the target. When I was training to be an infantry soldier the muzzle velocities of our various ammunition was drummed into our heads. None of that mattered to us, all that mattered was that our target couldn't outrun it and that it did what it was supposed to do when it arrived. Whenever I trained on any weapon system during my career....(You get the idea of where this is heading).
When I bought my first big game rifle, I chose the bullet type and grain I wanted to use, sighted my rifle for it and stuck with it. I found that a well placed 165 grain bullet will kill just as effectively as a well placed 180 grain bullet. I find that people place too much faith in muzzle velocities and not enough time ensuring proper placement. Pick a bullet you're comfortable with, sight your rifle for it, stick with it and put the time into practicing proper marksmanship principles. Muzzle velocity means very little if the bullet doesn't end up where it's supposed to be. During my military career, even with my lowest score on the ranges I never dropped out of the top five in my battalion and 6 months after basic training I couldn't have told you the muzzle velocity of my ammo, it just didn't matter.
Just adding my 2 cents worth.

Absolutely right, when I was in the army, I didn’t care how fast it was. All I just needed to know is, at what range can the bullet could still go thru the tree. car, cinder block. Then they took the FN 7.62 mm away from us and gave us the Mattel 5.56 which was deflected by a twig. 👿

well i picked up a bulk pack of the blazer ammo, also 50 thunderbolts, 50 federal too, gonna go out tomorrow to a buddies farm try it out. I am pretty clueless about velocity and such, as long as i hit the target I will be happy!
