I always thought I was well off, since I have first aid kits all over the place.
I vamped up the one we take to the property incase of bad wounds.
However, yesterday I was behind a 3 vehicle accident and the first thing I thought of was.. my first aid kit is useless.
what the heck are bandaids going to do??
luckly when we got to the worse vechicle, the girl was not badly injured and we were able to pull her to safety and keep her warm till the ambulance came. (The car was in bad shape and leaking and smoking bad, so we decided to move her for everyone's safety)
The emergency blanket came in handy, but that was about it. I knew i had latex gloves, but couldn't remember where they were.
ALSO i was quick thinking and grabbed my GO bag that was in the car as I knew that is where the blanket was.
However, I never watched the bag, and was VERY lucky that nothing from my bag was stolen. Never thought of this at all. It has some very important and expensive things in it.
There were LOTS of people that stopped and WATCHED didn't help at all, just lingered. If there was that one type of person in the crowd, I could have easily lost my GO bag or anything in the car, which we did not lock.
So I went to the dollar store and bought LARGE gauze, small gauze, pads, duct tape, glow sticks, latex gloves, small light, and some more emergency blankets. I removed almost all of the useless bandaids and made a different kit.
Now I know that it will be worth grabbing if this ever happens again.
Will also tie it with some breakable yarn somewhere, so its not under the seat.
It's easy to think you are prepared for something, until you live through it, then you see how unprepared you really are.
Luckly all 3 people in the accident were ok and no one seriously injured.
However all 3 went to the hospital. The man's dog got loose as a woman he asked to hold the dog did not and said "I'm sure it will find it's way home" NOT even thinking where the man lived.
we had dogs in our car, we had dog leashes that could have held the dog, if only someone had asked. If only she had thought for a second and put the dog in ANY car, to keep it contained.
Our dogs will now ALWAYS have their ID tags on them at all times.
Not everyone is a dog person and not everyone will care about YOUR pet. Be sure they have ID tags on to ensure you will get them back.
Hopefully this will enable others to really think about what they have in their cars, in times of need.
As I can only hope, that if i am ever in an accident, someone like me will be there to help.
thanks

A couple of things you may want to add: a safety vest, a piece of wood 4 inches wide by 1/2 inch thick by 18 inches long. The wood will work as a temp splint and in winter can help get you out of the snow if you are stuck. I also have a tether to attach my go bag to me when out of the car.

Almost forgot - fire extinguisher

When I was posted to Germany (Military) I was surprised that every new vehicle came, came with a standard first aide kit, and a hazard triangle. If you were pulled over for any reason , the Polizi, The German police, can ask you to produce a full first aide kit and hazard triangle. If you failed to do so, you would be given a 200DM ticket ($150 CDN) ticket and a requirement to report to the nearest police station within 2 weeks with one or be given a 20DM penalty each week until your provided one. When I ask where the first aide kit was, 2 years ago when I bought a new vehicle, the dealer looked at me as if I were crazy. Both vehicles that I own, have a FAK, a HT, a vest and 3 chem lite sticks.
