Just thought id throw a post up about an impulse buy I made yesterday.

Canadian Tire has a Salton Ice Maker on sale for $99, sale ending this Thursday.
This is a compact model in stores for promotion only. They have a bigger one for $200.

•Ice maker produces 26 lbs (12 kg) of ice in a 24-hour period
•Produces ice In 6-13 minutes
•Electronic controls with LED display
•Small and large ice cube options
•Internal storage for approximately 1.6 lbs of ice
•2.2 L water reservoir
•Removable ice basket and ice scoop included
•Dimensions: 9-1/2" W x 14-1/8" D x 12-7/8" H

In the event of a power outage how nice would it be to make ice to keep your freezer/fridge/cooler cold.
When I saw it I thought, what a great prepper item, and wondered why I have never seen it mentioned on any site.

Im gonna bring it camping too, no more fishing cubes out of the cooler for drinks and no more mid trip ice runs. 😉

Yes they are electric. We have one it works great. Gave it to my son because he never has enough ice. I was waiting for them to come on sale again. I missed it so thank you Sphinkx79. I intend to pick another one up tomorrow. You will need a generator to run it but it does not require as much power as a fridge or freezer.

I see...thanks for the information...I usually keep old distilled water jugs 3/4 full of water (ice) in the freezer also so in the event of an outage there are ice packs in there..I don't keep much in the freezer or fridge, mostly eat fruits/veg...but if freezer was thawing I would get out the canner and be canning on the bbq everything I could to save it.

That IS an interesting idea. I would never have thought to buy one since I don't like cold COLD drinks. No money for it right now but I may put it on my watch list.

So I drove into town today and after a couple of quick stops headed for Canadian Tire, card in hand and filled with eagerness. I roamed the store, up one aisle down the next. No Ice maker to be found. So I headed to the service desk. Is it still on sale? I asked. Yes it is, Said the clerk. My delight rose. Can I get one please? The clerk press a few keys looked at me and said no, we don't have any. Ok I thought, I will get a rain check. So I asked for one. The clerk pressed a few more keys and said no. Apparently it was a special item and you can't get a rain check on special items that are not in stock. Feeling rather dejected, my hopes dashed, I left the store empty handed.

Prepping can be so disappointing at times.

Have them check to see if another store has it in stock. If so they should be able to have it shipped to them for pickup. Just a thought. Also if you go to the website you can access different stores and see who has what in stock. You can follow up with a phone call to be sure and have them hold it for you.

Unfortunately the next closest Canadian Tire is North Bay which is a three hour round trip. Also I tried that before but they won't take your card over the phone. Ca' la vie. But thanks for your input JAB.

Canadian Tire has the habit of putting item on sale that they have a very few of. I went into one of their stores to buy a sleeping bag that was 60% off, half hour after it was open, to find out that that LAST ONE HAD JUST BEEN SOLD!. It was the first day of the sale, in London there were only 7 of these items in stock for 2 stores. But it got me into the store didnt it.

Yes I agree Canadian Tire does have some good sales but their only intent is to get you into their store. Ever tried to return a car battery? Its a nightmare. Not my favorite store.

Yup! Didn't have much success. They did not check that each cell was active. All they did was hook it up to a load tester that looked like it was there from the 50's and that was that. I am very careful what I buy from them now, even though many of my preps come from there and, as you may remember from Sunday, I do still recommend some items from them. I do think that my bad experience was more of an issue of an assistant manager trying to keep costs down and was probably localized to this particular store.

The battery in question was replaced with a used one from a small local garage and turned the engine over with no problem...
