Are you permitted to install rainwater tanks in Canada?
We weren't allowed to install tanks (really stupid law!) until the last drought. Now everyone has at least one because the government decided we should have one to reduce the pressure on the water reservoirs. (go figure) Anyway the minimum size tank here is about 500 litres ($300-400 au approx)

yep, can even hook up the roof to drain straight into the cistern (if you have cistern of course)

😯 If you don't have a cistern doesn't that mean you use a "thunderbox"?

thanks for all the input. I picked up a water filter and extra cartridge for it as well as a hose to hook up the bigger propane tanks to my heater and stove. I also bought 6000 rds of .22 ammo ( its was on sale). I got a start to my food supply a lot of the cans don't have dates on then does this mean they don't expire?? I have a salt water fish tank so I got lots of sea salt hear. I got a kerosene lantern and a few bottles of kerosene. (was told not to use indoors?) Is there a better fuel that could be used indoors? bought a 11kg bag of white rice. I'm working slowly at stocking up but think i did ok for my first run!!! thanks again.

Sounds like you are on your way. Kerosene is fine to use indoors. All fuel burning appliances use oxygen and they are all a potential fire hazard. It would be a good idea to get a battery operated carbon monoxide detector as well as a fire / smoke detector.

kerosene lanterns can be used in doors, i use them all the time up at the cabin. Thats all i used for light one winter that i lived there and i went through 5 jugs of fuel in them. I think the jugs were 4l each. they put off good heat as well.

I tried lamp oil but it stinks too much. Does kerosene burn cleaner?

Use Kerosene grade 1K low sulpher. You can also use it in Kerosene heaters. Sometimes lamp oil will have additives and or be intended for outdoor use. Keep the flame low enough so you don't get any smoke. If you do it means you have incomplete combustion and therefore more smell.

Like Just A Bear said there are varieties of lamp oils and Kerosene mixtures.
Some lamp oil is for outside and some for inside, some have containments like perfumes and others do not.

Make sure you trim the wick when it becomes a black ridge. Adjust up and down for a better burn to light ratio.
Kerosene is premium more refined version of Diesel Fuel. You can run your heater with Diesel in most cases, it will smoke more and require more air intake and exhaust though. With the price of Kerosene at $13.50 per gallon and Diesel at only $5 ish per gallon, this winter/fall I will be using diesel instead. Lamps can also be run on diesel, although you can mix the Kerosene and Diesel together, say 1 part kero and 3 parts diesel it will burn better. Even a 50/50 mix is cheaper.
