We heat with wood (though "officially" our heat is oil forced furnace). The house is 2600 sqft built in 1885, updated with excellent insulation which is a key point for any heating options. Invest in good insulation and a good stove. We use the Pacific Energy Aderly, the biggest one.
Combined with the vents we put in (see photos) this allows heat to go upstairs, the ceiling fans also help move it around. We created a convection action, hot air up through the vents and cool air circulates down the stairs. The room the stove is in has a cement floor which also soaks up heat and radiates it over night. Everything was planned to work this way.

Research and look into ways to max heating, may as be as simple as adding a vent or two
