The Hobo Stove.
A 1930's depression era masterpiece that you can put together for very little if not free if you peek in enough blue boxes on recycling day;) I can cook an entire meal, heat any sized can of food, fry food, boil water, make soup and stay warm with only a few handfuls of small sticks. I bet you have the suitable materials to make one in your house right now and you didn't even know it.
Here is what you need:
Coat hanger
1 large coffee tin or well cleaned 1 gallon paint can
Tin snips. To cut coat hanger and an opening in the can.
Drill. Hand or electric to drill air holes and the starter holes for cutting the opening.
2 bits. One small to make starter holes and then a large bit to make the air holes large enough
Study the pictures below carefully and then make your own. I modified mine to have a hole drilled near the top so it can be hung from a back pack with a carabiner and I used coffee tins that had tight fitting plastic lids so you can even keep them filled with a bit of dry birch bark and tinder so they are always ready to go. Make two or three. Can even be used in an indoor fireplace, I tried it. Stupid simple to use but make sure you actually cook something on it to get used to it.
The pics are large so click on them to expand.

That is great! I wonder about combining it with a rocket stove style just so it would be more efficient maybe? Also easy to add more fuel while still cooking. I have never used one, so I wonder what your thoughts might be on that. In any case, I love yours, it's simple and easy to make with things on hand.
If your home library contains more volumes about survival-related topics than your local public library, you might be a prepper.
Agreed, an important piece of equipment to have, especially when your planning on doing some travelling. I plan to modify one with an exhuast tube to be used within a modified tent for cold weather.
