By that i mean, how/why did you end up prepping? For myself it was a rather interesting route( to me anyways). I never really payed too much attention to world or even local events, basically living in my own little world. Last year a couple coworkers were discussing buying some silver, asked me if i wanted in...Well started doing some research on silver and ended up at Max Keisers website and the silverbear cafe, two eye openers. From there a little more research on bank bailouts and corporate greed, knew it existed but just not how rampant. Leading me to websites like Infowars and zerohedge, eyes opening further. All this was fine and dandy but was too American centric .From there it was the quest for Canadian sites, found a few. On a number of websites saw adds for food storage, googled and you tubed it, and the term prepper popped up on many occassions. Okay what exactly is a prepper? More investigating. Found what these people( who a few years ago i would have dismissed as crack pots) made a ton of sense considering the new knowledge i was seeking out. So have started getting supplies together. Am i close to where i want to be? NOT a hope, but am buying a little extra each week and am putting what i would spend on toys towards my families future.

We're a one income household...I really started early in my adult life by keeping a several month supply of non perishables like TP and Paper towel, soaps, shampoo etc.
I homeschooled my two youngest because the local public school had some issues and left a lot to be desired... so using grocery shopping as a tool for math/home ec/social studies was the norm for us. The registered umbrella school I registered my kids with to keep the local Board of Ed out of our business, was run by a lovely Mormon family and we had lots of great convos about living lean $$ wise, stocking up on sales to be able to afford homeschooling on a more than shoestring budget.
From that point I started keeping a bigger stock of items in my fruit cellar room (really just a walled off cold room we built). I always had a stock of at least a couple of months worth of food and essentials because I'm cheap 🙂 and always took advantage of loss leaders.
When my husband was off work for a month we relied on my stockpile and then again when he was off on Workers' Comp with a hernia/surgery we relied on it for 6 weeks as sick pay was 60% of his wages (comp paid for the surgery but then denied his claim and we fought for several years to no avail, he tore the hernia at work carrying something of weight up stairs, he's a tradesman).
Now it's become a habit but, I want to do better and my goal is to have a minimum 6 month supply on hand. Having had a tiny tornado come through town a few years ago and wreck my old elementary school was an eye opener too.

My neighbours have thought me a bit odd bringing in 6 giant packs of toilette paper at a time, or 12 dish soaps but I just smile and explain it away as "It's on sale so I'll buy it now while the weather's nice... it's better than schlepping this stuff into the house in the snow and slush, ."
When I had three teenagers in the house and cases of soup/beans/crap dinner/tuna/etc came in the house...I'd just smile and say..."Wait till your kids are teenagers and eating you out of house and home"

Now times are tough even for those making a decent livable wage....I know my family won't starve and my adult kids can come shop out of mom's fruit cellar because they know they can afford to reimburse me and make their dollars stretch...and sometimes I'm able to give them stuff because it's older and I want to cycle it through.

Shopping this way saves time and gas too.

The economy is in the toilet....I don't plan on being an ostrich like so many of the people I know,....that includes a lot of family who grew up during the Depression.

I'm the lady you're stuck behind in the grocery store with the over loaded cart filled with cases of tuna, peanut butter, huge bags of rice and the weary looking husband

Ex military and bush monger, so survivalist to prepper. Found info online, about storing food, years ago, it was a LDS site.
Then progressed to making the Excel spreadsheet more all inclusive. Changed my thinking from just having food around to how to grow it myself, sustainable living. Sustainable living to Permaculture-Prepper.

Due to being divorced for the 3rd time, don't ask, don't do it, stay single (ps just got a dog, so no worries there 🙂 and keep your credit. I found someone who had an online ad in kijiji.ca about living off grid and permaculture. So I went and met them, all good, now helping on the property to make it a sustainable permaculture garden and forest area.

WildernessReturn,
I'm curious what area you were looking on Kijiji. I am in a position to relocate and would love to get involved in a similar situation. I don't feel the need to own land, I just want to "work it." You can PM me if you want.

The area I was looking for was Ontario.
I started looking and looking and looking. There were a few at the time, some were absolutely incredulous, and some wanted only artists! I found one that looked normal in the area that I wanted anyways, although there was a great lead from the Thunderbay area, that would have been great too.
so basically, the Soux and Fenelen Falls area.

Carbon,
I found an Excel spreadsheet with info on it, then over time I adjusted the info and needs to suite me. It is a good way of keeping track of things. Mine now has several sources listed, lots of info, lots of pages. I would post it here, though I do not think I can.

I will see if I can put it on my blog. I can email it to you easy enough though, send me your email addy in pm, and do not complain about the spelling mistakes in the file 😀
