I am an old map and compass man
Is there any one who is good with a hand held gps
If there is I would like to meet for a few pointers
OK so its more than a few pointers I can't figger it out

Try this. Using your GPS along with your compass and map initially. Start with the basic functions and work from there.
I never travel without my compass and tend to use it more primarily because it it is easier and faster to get fixes. GPS works well when you are moving and the arrow points in the direction you need to go but that means you are constantly holding it while getting thru the brush. I like them when I have a final destination to get to like when staking claims (for the location of corner post), or returning to camp. But for traversing the bush, give me the compass. Even a cheap one will do.
But like I said, start with the easy stuff and just work with them together.
