today, my grandmother passed away, a woman who lived through the great depression of the late 1920's to late 1930's, i wont ever forget the things she taught me.
she passed on sewing and canning to me,
she always said make sure you have extra food and clean drinking water on hand, becasue in the depression times were very tough, the unemployment rate was around 30%
she talked on about having to eat soup's made from almost nothing and whatever meat that her family could scrounge up.
i remember when she told her shoes wore out, the sole literally fell off them, so her father cut the treads off an old wheelbarrow tire, and she stitched them onto her shoes. very resourceful woman.
which brings me to the point i want to make, i wish i had more time with her, that we could chat more about the depression and what her and her family did to survive.
All of the information i learnt from her, and from all you, my friends here on the forum here. i am going to pass it all on to my children, when there born.
and i hope you all will pass your infomation and skills along to those who are closest to you.
Life is to short.
Maxxpower, please accept my sincerest condolences.
My Grandmother lived until 102 - she was born in 1904 and lived through WW1, the Great Depression, WWII, the invention of flight, television, and the transition from horse to machines. She was a wealth of information! She continued to live in her home, where she died. They always heated with wood that they cut themselves, had a huge garden in a short east coast season, raised chickens, pigs, cows for food. I learned some amazing things from that generation. I used to ask my own Mother to tell me stories, every night at bedtime, about "the olden days" and she would tell me of lean times ....
Only now do I wish I had asked them more......
I try to impart on my own children and grandchildren any skills they are interested in learning from heating with wood, chopping firewood, cooking, baking, gardening, canning, dehydrating food, home maintenance, etc. etc. I just DO and hopefully they help and learn or learn by 'osmosis'... and for the most part I think they have.
So sorry to hear that she passed away, hoping you smile when you remember her, like I smile when I remember my Grandmothers.
Take care WildE
I am sorry to hear that. {{{{hugs}}}}
I am so very sorry for your loss. I know exactly how you feel though.
To have a full day with my gran, oh it would be heaven. She had alzheimer's so most of my knowledge from her was learned at a very young age because she began to lose it but, what I did learn it better than gold (literally, she taught me how to sew by hand... that is what I do for a living! My mom by machine but hand sewing is my gravy!)
One thing I suggest (especially right now) is write everything down that you can remember, write down stories and quotes and memories you may hear from other family members. I heard the wildest and funniest stories about my Gran at my aunt's funeral 10 yrs after my Gran had passed. I came home and wrote them down. I was glad I did, I feel like I am reading her diary (even though it is my handwriting) when I look at those notes and I feel closer to her.
I do hope you are holding up ok and I wish you well through this difficult time. Blessings and light to you and your family.
I'm sorry for your loss maxxpower

thank you everyone for your kind words, preppers are my kinda people.
As I have always said, "information that is not passed along, is wasted knowledge". A teacher learns by teaching.
"We 'Prep.' to live after a downfall, Not just to survive."
That is what we're doing here...passing along knowledge where we can, discussing options and learning from those with more experience and knowledge!

Exactly, and I wish my wife would see it that way. She's a "Head in the sand type" 🙄
