I usually have quite a few requests for puffballs from friends and family but this year its seems that they are very scarce compared to previous years and the few that I have found have been full of worms and millipedes, Even the small young puffballs.

ANyone else noticing this or is it just a localized issue?

Cheers
Oxford

Haven't seen any yet but it must be good conditions around here, the mushrooms are larger and more prolific than I remember from last year.

If you allowed them to turn, yes, they will go black and if you stepped on them, they would puff, its just that as the name says.. they are Giant Puffballs, most of them get around the size of a volleyball, but as you can see not all are perfectly shaped.. just remember, that while you will end up peeling the outer lighter brown coating, they should be pure white/cream inside for eating, any hints of off color and they are to old for use.. just take them out to a good area and let them finish turning and seeding the area..

Here is a picture of one I was cooking this year its a nice little one that i found, it was golden brown from frying but you can see the inside color..
