Is anyone currently raising rabbits for meat?
If someone is in the Durham Region area I would love to have a look at your set up and learn.
I have always been interested in rabbits, but unsure as to how to start.
Also if anyone knows where to purchase rabbit meat in the Durham Region area, please let me know
I know I will not get away with backyard chickens, but rabbits could be done under the radar.
thanks

Depending where you are you might be allowed to raise chickens.

Oshawa is it allowed (no roosters)
Clarington it is not :-S

Hi Hridika Rabits are the easiest animals to raise.I have been raising them all my life.(and I am pretty old)The best to buy them at the live stock auction.I live in Huntsville and I go Woodville .I am sure there is one closer to You.You have to buy male and female or buy pregnant female.they carry babies (pregnant) for 28 days.they nurse babies until they start eating them self.Keep the male separate until the babies are little bigger and than put the female with the male for a day or so together and she will be pregnant again.Medium size rabbits can have up to ten babies at each birth. In summer I feed them mostly grass and rabbits pallets (you buy them in bigger bags at aggro centers or tsc stores )Make sure they always have water For more info.go to my posting (henry) give me your E mail address or number and I will answer all your questions.
Henry.

send a message to Anita,
she has contacts in the Durham Region for all sorts of critters.
Also check out Kijiji.ca and Graigslist, there are often for free rabbits and other animals.

I'm to far away from you but I also raise rabbits, got them the first summer we moved to the farm and have had them since, If you are really interested, get Storey's Guide to raising rabbits, it will answer all your basic and most of your advanced questions and even include instructions on plans for gear etc, yes you can go to a sale, around here they are once a month and if you watch and know what you are looking for, can get a nice young doe but you are typically in the dark on blood lines etc.

Check out your local kijji and also check out ARBA to see if there are local breeders in your area, if its a show breeder, don't talk about butchering, at least not at first, but yes, if you have two does and buck, and you breed even four times a year, you will soon find yourself in a need of a number of good grow out cages and a way to recycle or dispose your leftover parts of the butcher, which are typically iligal to place in town garbage, and unless you know how to correctly use compost pits, will leave a smell in the regular compost, well unless you have a good amount of wood carbon chips.

By no means am I not saying this is not a good idea but I am wanting to give a few idea's of things that are a bit harder to deal with in town then on the farm.

Around here the crows will polish off the remains. I just talked to a new neighbor of mine and he said he saw a vulture of some kind. Either way he said he shot a skunk a coyote and about 20 gophers. Within 4 hours there was nothing but bones left. This is why I do not shoot crows. They are my cleanup buddies. We also have about 4 -5 hawks within the 160 acre area around me and I am not sure but I do believe I saw an eagle too seeing how it was about 3X the size estimated of the hawk visually. I love birds of prey.

Stay away from Homesteading Today. I've found it to be very volatile. Any mention of making money, or turnin a profit at ANYTHING will get you severly chastized. Try this Rabbit-specific forum instead: http://rabbittalk.com/ . It has a section on Meat Rabbits. Very helpful folks that helped me for the 2 years I raised rabbits for personal consumption.

Hey BeaAruthur
..... maybe they just don't like how you ask you question. I've found "Homestading Today" to be a great source of information. And would of posted the link otherwise.

If you want to lose weight, go on a rabit diet, but ensure that you take protine tabs or you will go dumb and manipulative within a week. 😯
