Do you try to educate people the need to be prepared? If so, how do you go about doing it?
For years I have been trying to get the ex to understand food and water prepping. I am not sure if he ever will but at least he now has a bit of stuff in his house.
I have been sharing a lot of what I have been learning with my mom. She has done food prepping for years but nothing for heat, water or light. This weekend we were trying to figure out solutions for her. With her being sick, the best solution we have come up with is combining households.
My mom in turn has been discussing with my aunt and her nurse about the need for prepping. My aunt like my mom has been doing food prep for years. It turns out the nurse also does some prepping but what I do not know. The nurse in turn mentioned that she has a friend that has an on line site selling prep items. I am waiting to hear back about the site.
I know enough not to say anything to co workers as they think I am nuts for canning, dehydrating, etc. Some day, when I am ready I hope TSHF because of these people. One person food shops everyday and gets nasty when freezing meat specials is mentioned.
I belong to several on line groups and have been slowly trying to get them to "stock up" rather then discuss prepping in full terms.
Well, I feel like I am banging my head against a wall when it comes to "sharing the word" of prepping (yet I have to listen and nod in agreement with my friends and families when they shove their religion down my throat). I got my mom started with a 4 tier shelf and some pasta and sauce but after that she was done. She thinks nothing will last that long that she will need to actually have to be prepared.
My BFF said at dinner in February, "The government will come and help us. We won't be like the Hurricane people." I actually had a moment of "Why are we friends? Are you really that dumb?" Yes. She is.
To start "prepping" is easy. People think OMG I NEED THOUSANDS OF CANS OF FOOD! No they don't. It needs to be "dumbed down" from what the end result COULD be. Like really, how many of us woke up one day and
said today I start prepping! Then went out and spent a few thousand? I doubt any of us did, but a lot of people think we all spend our entire paycheques on canned food and bottled water every week.
Little pieces add up and quick BUT, I know my friends only hear BLAH BLAH BLAH. It frustrates me. So, my Mom's shelves were filled by me. She bought an electric BBQ (as I shook my head wanting to scream WHY!?!?!?!?). I bought her a little fondue thing with a few extra cans of fuel... when all else fails, she can cook with that on her patio. She knows how, just doesn't want to.
When someone says "Oh no I can't afford that!" I really say this.....
Say you go to the store for groceries once a week?
You decide to spend $5 a trip extra... where do you start?
Tuna costs 88 cents for the store brand can. 88 cents x 5 cans. Heck, spend the extra couple of dimes and get 6! And when you go home, clear out a shelf in your linen closet. Place the 6 cans there. Bravo! You are prepping!
Week 2, go shopping and ohhhhh chunky soup (or chefboyardee or alphagetti...whatever) is on sale. $1.50 a can for Chunky. Buy 3. Put them on the shelf when you get home.
Week 3, spend your 5 bucks at CDN tire or Home Hardware. Buy a gallon jug or two for water... take them home, clean 'em, fill 'em, put it on the shelf.
Week 4, ramen noodles. (I buy the cheap store brand for 20 cents each) You can buy 25 packages for $5.
Week 5, go to the buck store and buy a hand held can opener ($1), 2 packs of emergency candles ($1x2=$2), 2 packs of wood matches, total $5 plus tax.
Week 6, buy a small coleman camp stove if you can... can't afford one? Oh buy a chaffing dish fuel can. About $5. Now you can cook your food.
After that 3 or 4 minute speel, the ones who are truly interested say "Now if I spent $10 or $20 a week, I could fill that shelf faster!" and then want more details... I don't talk about canning or rationing until they are ready for it... that can be a lot to take. And it can scare people off. So starting with things they recognize or would normally eat without cringing, I have found, is the best start.
But, I never reveal how much I actually have in my house but, those very close have seen the majority and have said it is overwhelming.
Well said Mamaizzy! I've given up on trying to convince most people, It's like peeing against the wind!I'm still at my mum thought.

I am giggling.... my aunt used to say that all the time!
I think by sharing with a few people this week, one person is going to start prepping....only she doesn't know that's what she will be doing. She is going out to buy a dehydrator after I shared a bit of what I have been doing. 🙂

Gotta get with the new internet lingo folks.
It's now TOAB (toe-ab) Tits On A Bull. Another is "eye - dee - ten - tee" works out to ID10T or idiot.
I've given up trying to spread the word to sheeple. They just stare at me like I'm the uninformed one. Didn't you hear the news? We're in recovery and everything will be fine.

I turned my now-wife onto prepping back when we were still a new couple {...mind you, we met while WWOOFing on an organic/permaculture homestead, so, she was already interested in resiliency, preparedness, a homesteading lifestyle};
Have also turned my mother onto it to some extent... not seriously enough (in my opinion) though.
Have turned a few close friends onto the mindset - although, not sure how much stockpiling they have done yet.
Just curious adamandah - where did you WWOOF?

I like the army acronym SNAFU, Situation Normal, All F’ck Up, much like the Government.
"We 'Prep.' to live after a downfall, Not just to survive."
