My down time has sometimes turned towards entertainment that involves prepping and survival. Recently a friend of mine introduced me to a series called 'Ultimate Survival Alaska'. Here's the link to the complete series 1: http://watchfullepisode.com/category/ultimate-survival-alaska-season-1/ or you can find the first episode on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8PpOI6loNE
It's actually quite interesting and I'm on episode 3 if anyone cares to follow along with their insights on these survival experts and the dilemmas they've encountered.
One spin-off of Doomsday preppers that was recently released is called Doomsday Castle. This 'guy' is building a castle in the wilderness with his kids in preparation for end-times.

Whoa, you can learn from anything eh , I watched that doomsday prepper link . Anyone else think that castle construction was not even close to be structurally sound ? Maybe this whole thing is staged , a set for spin off show because the entire premise seems to lack integrity and credibility . Also putting things like a bamboo spike pit on the grounds of a tourist attraction and putting that on television are asking for government to come in looking for violations ? On the other hand you have to respect others are putting a lot of money and effort into their preparations, money most of us do not have and if we did, it would be applied to greater effect . I seriously thought making your prepping a paying endeavour was brilliant and rallying family to be aware and cooperating was a real strength .
Love Ultimate Survival Alaska...
wait for episode 4 when Willie and his crew meet an Alaskan homesteader...notice how they proceed very cautiously!
Ultimate Survival Alaska was great, it took a while to sink in it is scripted but still a great show. Watching pretty much confirmed for me that every energy unit be it to fuel your body or fuel your house for warmth, gets dearer in colder climates . I am woosy enough to stick to the south coastal BC climate .
I hadn't hear about Ultimate Survival Alaska - love it. Thanks!

One thing that made a big impression in my mind is the northern mountain guys taking advantage of storing stuff up on the ceiling to maximize space but I was also thinking it might be extra mass insulating the ceiling and how one might design dry storage into the ceiling to maximize function. A decorative paneled ceiling could in fact hold additional concealed storage and still maintain the clean aesthetics we are use to . I think much could be done to have more livable homes that add to our resiliency .

Wow, couldn't believe that guy was out there all on his own.
I have a few different boats but now I'm keen on getting a packraft after seeing episode 3. What a cool looking portable boat.

Packraft knew the impact such visibility would have for their brand. They picked a good show to deal with.
However, if you've got a real expedition or hard-use planned, I'd strongly urge you to consider something sturdier like any of the Canadian-made collapsible canoes.
Some are available here http://www.keroboats.com/
When I did my trek from Baker Lake, NU to Yellowknife, NWT (700+ kms) some of us had collapsible canoes, some of us had inflatables and some of us had nothing. By a wide margin, those of us with the collapsible units fared better and were happier in the end (even with the heavier item) than the guys with the inflatables. Of the 3 inflatables we left with, only 1 made it to the end of the trek. All 4 of our collapsible canoes survived till the end.
Also, two important things that Ultimate Survival Alaska doesn't show you... 1) Packrafts are a real b!+ch to inflate, they consume time and energy. If you're tired and hungry and cold, there's a lot of cursing involved in getting them in the water. 2) I'm 6'4" and haven't found one i'm comfortable in yet. Even models that say they're for ppl 6'6" are very cramped and leave no real room for extra cargo.
It's coming... and it's going to hurt!

Researching this now. Thanks for the insight. You've changed my opinion. Perhaps a new thread is order with respect to the ultimate (portable) prepper floatation device..?

watched a few shows of doomsday castle, dumbest show i have seen in awhile, you build a castle on top of a mountain that everyone can see for ten miles away.they would have been better off building an underground shelter or at least one that was less visible.survival alaska is better. i liked how they built the smoker on the beach, thats one i will remember how to build if i ever need it.
Doomsday castle is a farce , as mentioned that castle is going to be visible in winter and everyone in the close by towns know about it and precisely where it is by now . The guys wear too much makeup . The castle looks like it was made by a set designer with no regard to engineering. They mentioned they were going to have a moat, has anyone seen many moats on the top of hills before ? I think it would destabilize the soil too close to the walls made of concrete block , if they could keep the thing filled . I am a neophyte myself and I am struggling to think if I learned anything from that show . The money that family made to do the show was probably worth it I suppose , you could take that money and do something to really increase their resiliency like go study Sepp Holzers mountain terracing and ponds for permaculture production . I can understand why the production of this show is capitalizing on sensationalizing the whole thing but it really puts out a stupid image of preppers and that is already a tired idea from doomsday preppers .

I never said it was intelligent or that I even agreed to the idea. Like any reality show it's more about the drama then what they're actually doing. I don't think this is 'fake'. I think there is a prepper that wants to build a castle in preparation for Doomsday. Something I would never do. Out of sight in a bunker would be more appropriate to me.
Nevertheless and like the original Doomsday Prepper series - it's that 5% of the show in which you pickup on an idea that was smart, practical and something that you never thought of before. Also, that blond daughter is cute...

Thanks for the link Ultimate survival alaksa. I would just torrent them but this will save on disk space.
I always wondered why they would have windows large enough to drive a Volkswagon through and why they are so close to the ground that you can almost step into them from outside. Not sure if I would be advertising that I have three daughters either... that alone would attract too much attention.
