So, if labour is a pressing need for some, and we want to have monthly meetings around Ontario, why don't we combine the two events whenever possible?

would also like to get some larger mylar bags, 5 gal. bucket size too.

I can help with the Mylar. Msg me.

I have about 100 20"x30" (5 gal) and about 300+ 10"x16". 10"x16" is my and my customers fav size.

I made a one time bulk order from the U.S. to satisfy my needs and to sell some to offset my other supply costs. Been selling them on Kijiji and its been working quite well.

Honestly, I would ditch the food saver idea. Apparently they do let air in after some time, where mylar does not.

Mylar + your vaccum + oxy absorber (cheaper - hand warmers) and a hair straightener is the best solution you will find.

I did some research on food saver bags before I bought mylar, heres a couple posts from a quick search for you to decide for yourself:

Great idea

Edit - someone offered to help me with my garden and for the first time I said yes to the help 🙂

$10,000 would be welcome......

But more seriously:
1. High quality wood cook stove.
2. A likeminded family or two in the Near North to bug out to homestead.
3. And what the heck, $10,000 🙂

To donate come fall.....
1997 Ford Aerostar 3.0l V6.
It runs and I use it in the summer as a utility vehicle.(just used it today to haul 2 sofas to the recycle center)
HOWEVER...the floor under the drivers side door is rusted out and it has a big hole in the exhaust manifold, making it very loud. As well, there are a few other issues, like power steering leaks occasionally, but nothing that keeps it from starting & running.
1 7/8" hitch permanently attached to rear frame.

This vehicle could be donated to a prepper retreat and used to haul stuff around.
I would not keep this on the road due to it's condition, but here in Quebec, you don't need to keep papers on a vehicle used on private land, maybe the same applies in Ontario.

I have been dreaming for years and have been incredibly blessed to be able to move to this farm almost two years ago. We have lots of plans for the future - a greenhouse, a wood stove, more fencing (which will be put in soon) painting the garage/potting shed plus structural work, eaves trough repair on the barn (it's only 45ish feet in the air!), patching the barn roof where some id*** shot a 22 through it from the inside to kill birds, more hours in the day to deal with all the gardens that need re-doing, a new garden bed started for next year, electrical work, plumbing and structural work done in the barn...I fell through the upstairs floor this week - one leg went through a rotten spot - nice war wound and rainbow coloured bruise to show for it!

slow and steady wins the race...I have lists and plans and just keep on going. If I think about it too much it seems impossible!

OK I have been reading this topic daily and really thinking about it.
I need to move out of town. I need to get away from nosy people who do not understand what I do or how my kids are (my oldest and youngest have developmental issues thanks to 2 genetic disorders, we have a lot of judgement cast towards us daily).
I need land, not alot, a few acres would be sufficient.
I need shelter there, and I am confident my son and I could build it ourselves over time but, in the interim we could live out of a trailer or converted bus.

My BO plan and the move to eastern Ontario have been cancelled thanks to life tossing us lemons, but it was good to find out now rather than later. Alot of money, time and energy wasted for someone else to benefit when the SHTF, so I guess I need people around me who will be understanding at my choices as well and not to have ultimatums thrown at me when crap doesn't go completely as planned.

mamaizzy,
I completely understand your position.
My wife and I looked for months for a piece of rural land to call our own.
Luckily we found a place with a well, septic, and house even though it needed some tlc and renos.
We used it as a country place for about a year while working on it and then finally moved in almost a year ago.
Although the renos are still ongoing, we are able to live here full time.
It takes time and patience, but keep working at it.
Let's just say that we didn't have hundreds of thousands of dollars in the bank, but were able to find something that we could pay cash for.
Living mortgage or rent free really makes a difference.

Keep looking, and trying...you'll find something eventually.

Thank you both.
My boys were all diagnosed with Autism years ago, now I am fighting for proper diagnosis. I am a firm believer that my boys and many others were just "labelled" for government funding purposes. Throw a label on it and that is it. Pisses me off to now end! My oldest (almost 18) just moved into a group home. He loves it, it is temporary until he can be more self sufficient and independent and our plans did change greatly (mostly because our "friends" said they didn't want him back there ugh) but he is still included with my plans. I told him today (He has to come home for Sunday and Thursdays to see mama) what my new plan was, he smiled and said "I trust you. it will rock! As long as we have a HUGE garden!" lol I am looking for land to build on or a lil chunk o' land with a run down house I can fix up. I am also now looking more towards lake erie... about an hour or hour and a half from my mom and some close friends is enough.
If I could be within an hour from London or Brantford or Chatham, I would be satisfied. I love the area near Sarnia but, it is chemical valley so, I will avoid that if I can. I should have enough money for a couple of acres within the next year (as I will have to purchase outright, no mortgages on vacant land)
I can anything except get rid of a rodent (my kids do that for me) and electrical work. I am learning more plumbing as I go and I have helped build a few barns when I was younger. I am sure I could build a house or the outer shell at least. It doesn't have to be glamorous, it just has to be mine. 😀

Now with my long sob story (real I am a survivor and bounce back pretty quick) I think a community, where everyone owns their own chunk of land in proximity to each other, where there is a communal farm area and/or shared sheds/barns/common area, could work BUT we would all need our own space and have to be responsible for our own payments/property etc. The folks who live there year round would be the ones doing the majority of the work. I am ok with that but, It should not be considered a "holiday" for those who are only up on weekends. There will always be work to be done and everyone regardless of age can help in some aspect.
We will need carpentry, plumbing, electrical, contractor skills in abundance!
Cooks for meals.
Folks to landscape and keep things looking decent yet, not too purdy!
The land would be working for us too...
Maple trees can be tapped for syrup.
Chicken coops for birds (I can make these out of ANYTHING lol We made one out of a kids playhouse once!)
Gardens for veggies.
Orchard for fruits.
Small barns for goats and/or pigs (pigs are awesome as they eat anything! Saves on food waste if you can feed the leftovers or scraps for the pigs)
Hoophouses can be built to extend growing seasons for less than $50 each! (oh I wish I could have one here so badly!)

Has anyone seen the village of Lilydale in New York state? It is a town based on spiritualism beliefs and they have a small community that works for them and is fairly isolated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lily_Dale,_New_York
It is run like a corporation. That could work.
We all aren't going to like each other but, we could all respect each other. (I know I am weird as hell, I am ok with that lol) to have a group of knowledgeable, resourceful people in one location, even if some are part time, could be extremely beneficial in the long run.

I am not advocating a religious community, it is just one I know of that was founded on a belief. Our belief is survival and prepping... that in itself has become a religion or spirited movement at least, no? 😀

Hang in there Mamaizzy.......maybe the "prepper retreat" idea would work really well for you. I'm really interested in that idea (not that it would work for me...too much "globe" between there and here 😆 ) but I think it's an awesome idea and I really hope it happens. There are "eco-villages" scattered all over the world (some religious and some environmental type set-ups) is that maybe an option for you? I posted on another thread about "Earthsong Eco-neighbourhood" located in NZ but it seems to be similar to what is being proposed (but with more security 😉 )
