just a thought, in the winter you might want to go for a 8x10 or 10x12 tarp, that way you can close the ends better, and the sides can be burried under the snow to help keep it down in the wind and for insulation.

good thought! never really thought of that... guess i just thought keep it small, better then nothing lol, ive got experience making shelters from scratch and even spending the night in them, so a tarp isnt a need for me really, but saves gathering pine bows lol

Yes, I agree, but.. there is just so much rain now around here, January and rainy and then snow, then ice then rain. That will just drip you death in the pine bows unless they are very deeply laid.

In a pinch and for really quick, tarps come in very handy though.

I received "Preparedness Principles" by Barbara Salsbury in the mail this week.

I went to Costco in Burlington as it's better stocked in my opinion than Ancaster...though that may improve when their expansion is completed.
I went for flour, ScotchBrite scrubber sponges and coconut but ...spent way too much, but some of it was prepper stuff.

2 6 packs of Stagg Chili $7.99 ea ....reg. $9.99 ea on for $2 off
8x172 tissues boxes of Puffs with lotion for $16.99 (I'm positive there was a $3 discount on these but it didn't show up on the receipt)
80 tablet pack of Gravol good till 2014 for $9.79 (this is even better priced than the Life Brand equivalent)
1.13 kg bag of Duck Jerky dog treats ....this is a fabulous price and I'm going to keep these in the preps rotation as long as Costco keeps carrying them
500ct 500mg Kirkland chewable vitamin C $11.99
1.36 kg Folgers ground coffee $11.79

I'm the lady you're stuck behind in the grocery store with the over loaded cart filled with cases of tuna, peanut butter, huge bags of rice and the weary looking husband

Since I'm moving in February I've made a box for the "secure" location. Boxes of crayons and coloring books. All the card and board games. Snuggly blankets. All kids and adult books that aren't coming with me to my new location. Homeschooling books I collected when my daughter had thought about homeschooling. Nintendo, if we still have power. I've already purchased dozens of pencils and sharpeners. Craft kits for kids - big bulk yarns and large crochet hooks and knitting needles, large buttons, pipe cleaners - the boys and the girls will all know how to darn socks, sew on a button, fix a ripped seam or hem, knit a simple blanket. Early pre school to grade 5 math, spelling, logic books. Big beautiful coffee table books mostly of the coral reefs off of Australia and New Zealand. Breathtaking - for when your mind needs a rest. The children have already been playing in that location with previous trips with supplies, so it isn't going to be a scarey thing when we do need to stay there for awhile. Keeping the impact on the young ones is of great concern to me. Teaching them about what is up and how to cope little by little I feel is the best. (just my opinion). Of course, if we get thrown into something severe, that's a horse of a different color. RUN LIKE HELL AND DON'T LOOK BACK!!!

I need to be knowledgeable. I need to show no FEAR. I need to maintain the power. I need to share the knowledge and the power with MY kids. Then My kids can share with their kids and so on and so on.

Going back to the post of sound mind and body is so true. Having a child escape into themselves, into a shell is very difficult to heal and cope with while everything else is going on especially for their parents. I like to prevent, rather than fix (I'm referring to the mind).

For those of you with young children, is there something here I've not mentioned that you thought would be an excellent distractor for your kids that you would share with us?

Oh dear, sorry I'm kind of all over the place with this post..... oopppssssss.

I've been thinking about booze alot LOL

My husband and I don't drink, but I keep picking up those little liquor bottles and storing them up in our cabinet.

I figure they will be good for using as antiseptic, as well as some bargaining - may end up being just as valuable as cash one day.

Besides, if things get too crazy, I may want to start drinking.

i scored these collapseable water containers from walmart, they were reduced to clean the small one 10 litre was 2 dollars, and the 20 litre one was 3 dollars. http://www.relianceproducts.com/products/hydration/81.html and http://www.relianceproducts.com/products/hydration/84.html

these are an awsome deal, even the manfucatures website is selling these for way more then walmart had them reduced too. these would be great for camping, short term water storage ..... and the best part is when your not using them, they collapse right up. easy storage.

they also had the desert style jerry can type on clearance for 7 dollars.

Shredded and dehydrated 5 lbs of carrots...tonight I'll do 5 more lbs as coins/slices. Metro has them on 2, 5lb bags for $5 so cheap enough to experiment with

Reading this thread, I am relieved to have found people who stock up like I do! My stock pile consists of everything that is on sale. I shop sales obsessively.

Tomatoes 12 more cans
Canned soups 36 more cans
Tuna 12 more cans
Rice 2 - 8kg bags, one par boiled and one Jasmine
Tea Biscuits 3 packages
all on sale so I stocked up.
OH and some spices too. I got lemon pepper, basil and black pepper, 2 of each.
I am a couponer too (nothing extreme) and can't wait for Friday's pay... a friend told me TP was going on sale and I have a $4 coupon 😉 I need to stock up on some paper products asap. I don't even have a stock of paper towels or tissues any more. I need to fix that.

I also started a new batch of Mead (honey wine). I am down to about a dozen bottles in my closet, need some more. JIC.
