This guy wrote a great post on another website about all the things he would have done differently when he went off grid a year ago.

That was an interesting read. Some straightforward stuff which one needs to be reminded of. I couldn't help reading this with a smile on my lip so I do hope the original writer was intentionally slightly sarcastic and funny :). Thanks for providing this list. Its been printed out and put up as a reminder to learn from.

Bit late to the party, but thanks for that link as well.

As someone who is looking at facing the possibility of going the path just as this fellow is, this becomes a good checklist.

I wonder, is there anyone else that done something similar, or is or has worked through an alternative living lifestyle (like small house/trailer living for instance) particularly in Ontario -- that can add some bumps or advise here? An example would be, I've recently been lead to believe that a dwelling has to be a minimum of 1000sq feet. Does anyone have experience with this? I can't imagine having to occupy 1000sq feet by myself.

Ive been gathering the factors and material to do the same, to facilitate a faster basis for building a community.( I had mentioned on my proposed community topic about living in a 4-season-insulated trailer, or (cute helps) cabin on wheels. ) I may actually acquire this next month to finish its construction.
The first thing is that governed municipalities almost always legislate that in a seasonal access-only zone ,even in a non-permit-required 100 sq' shed, one is not "permitted" to live,sleep,heat/cook, etc.inside, thru winter. (I reckon they don;t want to have" death by freezing" on their community record, nor a potential fire hazard jsut anywhere out of easy reach. Valid concern which should be responsibly addressed ).
Some don't enforce this though , and locals recognize this as simply toughing it out , and generally respect it unless they feel somehow threatened by such radical presence as a recluse writer or such. So, it helps a lot to choose an un organized location to get established or to use as a close base for exploration of other possible sites nearby.
True, most regions/townships have a minimum of 1000sq',for a conventional house but i think i've seen 750 somewhere too. This not an issue with a trailer, especially if as a means to an end of building a larger structure for more accommodation. Then ,once established, in some places you could continue to make artist's cabins or for retreat and hiking visitors. Who says how long one can retreat?
I think these scenarios are possible with the legal agreements between participants in place.
Actually, 1000sq.ft. on one level with loft could likely be filled pretty quickly with all the gear and supplies for surthrival offgrid remote. It would also double as workshop, even partitioned for a future partner, or for livestock! 🙂

Runswithscissors,
Each county has a different set of rules. If you have a location in mind I would start making phone calls and asking about size requirements. One of the members of this group has in the last year starting homesteading out of a trailer where there was a small cabin already on the property. I haven't heard anything from them about issues with building. I will ask them if I can.
