I work on boats as a mechanic. I just sea trialed a small navy vessel that we just finished doing a refit on. During the trial there were a few 'crew' on board, nice guys, I just presumed they were navy. After the trial i was chatting with them and they said they were civilians that get contracted to move boats around for the navy. I asked why? They smiled and responded that they navy cannot operate their boats in fog, at night, or if there are passengers on board. I said to the captain, what happens if we go to war? He laughed, I hope it's a nice sunny day!!!!
Our navy here is a joke - no offense to anyone that serves! But those subs we bought from the brits are and always will be junk! No matter how much money we sink into them - no pun intended.
I find it hard to believe that the exercises the Canadian Navy participates in with units from other Navies from around the world are only conducted on bright sunny days. If the vessel just had a refit finished it is most likely in an "off line status" and in the custody of the civilian company charged with the refit. It will revert to "online status" and to RCN control once the refit is complete and the vessel has passed sea trials. The RCN was at one time the 3rd largest navy in number of vessels at the end of WW2...not in total tonnage.
To suggest that navy cannot operate their boats at night would imply that they could never leave port! Obviously this is not the case.
Canada at one time had the third largest navy in the world, now, is just a joke.
Rome at one time had the largest army in the world.
Canada's place as the third largest navy was also a time when it was really part of Britain's navy.
I believe the navy vessels could operate in all weather - I mean, even the old WWII ships we still have didn't stop at night or in fog's when they were first used. The newer frigates are equipped with the nearly standard electronics packages as the US or Britain ships with radar and sonar I'm sure.
I would think, given the Armed Forces personnel numbers, the Navy just uses contractors to move them so they don't have to allocate their already limited numbers.
I do have to agree with you in principle about those subs. Leave it to a Liberal government to pay for lemons just so they could save a buck or two cheaping out on National Defence.
I see McKay is taking a page out of the Liberal book by wanting to use Drones to patrol the North, probably at the expense of the Ranger program already doing so. Anyone else but me think it's odd that our Defence Minister all of a sudden married a Iranian? I smell a spai! >_>

G'day Wookie - I think he was having a go and playing with you. (Was he Australian by chance? 🙂 ) As you guys, like us and the Kiwi's are still members of the Commonwealth I wouldn't worry too much about a countries individual ability in this area. CANADIAN NAVAL POWER - as per GFP summary.

Likely your gov;t is negotiating for UAV's - ours is in the process of increasing our UAV fleet. We are also upgrading to the The Hobart class for a (AWD's) based defence capabilities - these are being phased in as replacements for the Adelaide class frigates and Perth class destroyers.
Your Navy is likely doing similar.
Also, it must be noted that much of the traditional support structure in the services is being put into the hands of logistic support groups such as the civilian group - SERCO (Serco Sodexo Defense Services)
operates here on far to an involved level in our military structure IMO.
I'm old, tired and crotchety - what's your excuse???
Only on sub is operative. One smashed the bottom and has damaged the torpedo tubes which is part of the inner hull, so its trashed. The other two are in repair.
Oh no. Now the word is out! During WWII there was a saying in the UK "loose lips sinks ships". Maybe we should take this opportunity to remind the rest of the world that although we only have one operational sub it is a really nice one. Also, although we don't have any nuclear weapons we could always borrow one again. 😉
Boots on our soil is the only thing worth worrying about. Stopping an invasion should be the objective (maybe every nation should adopt this and there would not be war). I could give a rip about having a military that is capable of attacking another nation or even leaving native soil. Keep our boys here and only use them for OUR use as a sovereign nation.

Sounds a bit like the old 'Scrap-iron Flotilla' wonder if they would gain a similar rep??
Or else - Need some serious diving lessons - I mean Driving lessons - How do you drive/steer a sub???

Hmmm! must rally my troop - if I can find 1 and plane for invasion of Canada 💡 😉 - well it's not a real invasion 😯 - a merger really as you are also part of the Commonwealth. 🙂
See - you - soon!!! 😀
😆 😆
I have to amuse myself - I'm alone in North Queensland with no one to play with. 🙁
