Finding a relatively simple water purification system is of great concern to my wife and I. We are curious to know what other folks might have or if anybody knows anything about the "aquapail"? We would like to have a water purification system that works and won't take-up a lot of space, preferrably something that is portable incase we have to hit the road.

go to instructables.com there are articles on how to make your own water purification systems, similar to the Berky ones

I would also recommend looking at the life straws, looks like a straw costs about $11 and you can drink from a pond with it

Look to getting a ketadine type system, small portable for potable water. I have an interesting one, based on dialysis ceramic membranes so do not need replacing, but lost the link. Need to go dig it out of my BOB bag and look it up again.

Berkey also makes a water bottle filter that is good for your BOB. It's what I have in mine. You put the water in and drink from the straw. It is flexible plastic so you can fill it and decant clean water to a canteen or other storage or just drink right from the bottle. Gives you a means to carry a bit with you. $26.00

Katadyn make a wide selection of filters, pumps and other products.
Katadyn Micropur MPI Water Purification tablets. Effective against Cryptosporidium, Giardia, bacteria, and viruses. Fresh tasting water, Each tablet will purify one litre of water. 30 tablets per package. They also have water bottle filters, hand pump filters, gravity filters or like berkey you can buy just filters and make your own.
I carry Katadyn on my site but as I'm just starting out only have micro pur in stock.

When you look at cost per gallon it's really hard to do better than a Berkey, a few thousand gallons per filter candle.
Clean water is about the most important survival need, food is second. This is not the place to scrimp. You can go cheap on your 3rd or fourth method of making fire, your 3rd compass or 3rd knife but for the stuff you need to stay healthy every day, spend what you need to to get it right the first time.

Why so complicated?,boil for 3-5 min at a rolling boil. Let cool and drink.

Because boiling will not remove toxins, chemicals or heavy metals. Some biologicals can withstand a 3 min boil. Do I need to say more?

Hi. I'm new to this group. Wondering if anyone's aware of the Lifesaver Water Bottle & jerry can solutions. May seem pricey, but it makes lots of safe water. I first saw it on ted.com. Here's their website: http://www.lifesaversystems.com .

Yes, I've been looking at the Lifesaver as well. We already have 2 smaller backpack filtration systems for the BOB's (can't think of what they're called atm: sweet water something or other from mec 😳 ).

The lifesaver is expensive but 20k litres! and can transport 5 gallons if needed...

I have an Aqua pail good for 1000 Gallons, never use it, but this will be my primary filter should the water ever stop flowing. I've seen great video's of it at work, and never heard a bad thing said about it.

I also keep a Brita filter jug will several extra filters, but not sure how effective that will be.

In addition to these I keep Aquatabs and large quantities of Bleach for water purification along with Berkie sport bottles and Saychelle pure Water straws.

Not sure how I missed this , but it sure caught my attention now!
Anyone with an Aqua Pail should check their manufacturing date and look at this link...
http://www.aquapail.com/
There is a recall...
In order to be entitled for a replacement you MUST contact your point of purchase by August 31st!

I have a 3000 on order but am not expecting delivery until September/October!!!
I may go for 2 X Aqua Pail 400 instead.

That being said...Bleach, 2 - 4 drops per liter, shake, let stand 30minutes and you're good to go...
don't like the taste of chlorine...use your Brita for that...problem solved.
Boiling and bleach will not take care of everything, but for short to medium term, it will do.

GOOD quality filters are the way to go...Berkey, Aqua Pail, etc. for larger quantities and a Lifestraw, Seychelle bottle, or similar for your BOB are recommended, as well as purification tablets such as Aquatabs.
Although I have decided to go with an Aquapail, there is an advantage to the Berkey system...replaceable filters. Even if you only expect to use one filter, keep a spare in case it breaks...one is none, two is one.
Personally, I like the 3 is for me rule.
My BOB has bleach in a small bottle with a dropper lid, Aquatabs, and a Seychelle bottle...not to mention the ability to make fire for boiling.

Don't be fooled by household filters you get at the hardware store...they ONLY remove particulate. Great for protecting your hot water tank and dishwasher...
not so good for drinkable water!

I saw the same TED video and bought one. These are very light weight and apparently work really well, but they're pricey and they have a limited shelf life (2-5 years) compared to other filter systems.

The last time I forgot that and used 2-4 ounces for a 3 Gallon container.. yukkers !!!
the water still tastes like bleach as it got into the Water Container ..
forgetful me ! One of those good tips to write down, normally I use the Iodine drops but ran out, so used the bleach.
