Hi everyone,

I know that many of us are still in the grips of the Alberta Flooding, but I hope that all it has done is strengthen our resolve in our prepper idiology, and open the minds of others who were affected who had never thought of prepping before.

I hope that those affected will not be offended by me posting a topic unrelated to the current stress we are all sharing. I want to keep this forum moving and developing and get back to discussing the topics we need to talk about to improve ourselves for when the next disaster hits.

So here is my next entry. I found myself pondering on trapping and other methods of proccuring wild food (prior to the floods of course) and tried looking up on youtube several methods that I have not already heard about. I was interested in finding methods that are relevent for the Alberta area and the type of wildlife that we have here. I also wanted to find ways that required little preparation and minimal tools to acomplish. I imagined the worst case scenario where I was basically stranded in the wild with no gear at all. How would I find meat to feed myself and provide the protein I would need to survive. I found a few different ideas, but I found this one very interesting, especially for our alberta climate.

I present to you, the Native American Fish trap:
This could be made larger to house more fish, could have a larger opening for larger fish, and I think it could be used in a river as well (provided it was not swift water)

I like this set up better then the first, and it sounds like it is set up on a river

Lets make this a group activity. Everyone with an interest, please post your ideas (or ideas you found on the internet) for others to review. Here are the parameters:

1) relatively simple to set up
2) fairly effective (a good food caught/work required ratio)
3) No traditional hunting required (fire arms, bow, etc)
4) minimal equipment needed (the less the better. think minimalist)
5) Does not have to be "legal". Again, this is a survival theme, not a "licensed hunting" theme. Worst case scenario

if you are unable to post a video detailing how it works, please write a detailed post including the equipment needed, the steps for preparation, and any other relevent info.

See you all after.

here is another good one I found called the "Deadfall Fish Trap"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=H-w4uXzBDIo&feature=fvwp

all thats needed is some fishing line, a hook, and some paracord.a knife would assist, but the notch work could be done with an edged stone

Just have not had time to try and get out, do it, get photos and take the time to write a detailed post on it.. I don't have video's ( I rarely watch u-tube) and so while I do have things to add to this thread and I think its awesome, it will take time for me to get to this on my never ending list of things to do!

I like the idea of the native American fish trap because when truly hungry, patience is a virtue I do not posses. I also like the dead fall fish hook idea more than the 'spring loaded' tree trap as the natural tendency of a tree is to 'relax' it's spring when 'loaded' for an extended period of time. Gravity is constant.

I do have snare wire in my bug out bag and have no doubt I will be in search of rabbit/hare trails if it come to that. I'll use a large stick or tree as an anchor as it won't travel too far.

Sling bow hunting fish is another quick way to land protein in an emergency. I recall a large rainbow trout in the Elbow river that probably had every lure imaginable dangled in front of him/her. An arrow would make or break that possible meal in very short order.

In the past having gone through 5 days without a stitch of food, only water, I can tell you that your morality goes out the window around day 3 (give or take a day). In SHTF I think I'd relax my morality on day 2 because food I catch does not diminish the food supply I have stored. I have Doves nesting in a tree in my yard. Those Doves are a (albeit small) food supply. A sling shot and a couple of well placed ball bearings could make a meal of those doves in SHTF. That is the way I see it.

A 'that just might work' mentality takes over when you are hungry enough. That mentality just might be what keeps you alive.

Than= I’d rather be rich than poor.
Then= I first became hungry then I ate.
There = She is there now.
Their = They have their things.
They're = They're going to the mall.
To = They came to the house.
Too = That's too bad.
