I've seen pictures and video of Medicine Hat and the South Sask river. I have rafted and canoed that river dropping in at Redcliff and pulling out at the last south bank park in Medicine Hat probably over 50 times. I was even 1/2 of the 1977 raft race champion team (we won by knowing where the currents run faster NOT hard paddling 😆 ). I have never seen the river that high in person. There is a little lazy creek that runs through Kin Coulee that will flash flood with a good downpour but that's part of what happens in semi arid desert.

I hope the best for those in Medicine Hat but most of those who live in the flats have been through this before. Don't live or build on a flood plain.

I lived in Medicine Hat 1982-1988, then 1994- until the 1995 flood took almost everything I had in the Flats (I moved to Walsh..lol) then from 1996-2002....I was not there in 2005 when that flood happened but it was worse than the 1995 and now this one was worse than 2005...I will personally not live where a river flood can take my home again.
