Hi all,

Wife and I just watched American Blackout the other night. I thought it was pretty darn cool.

Good: I really liked how no one was a superhero. Everyone could be injured and/or disabled from wounds, sixteen year olds could be left at home alone (does yours know how to take care of themself?), anyone could be stuck in an elevation and pushed to limits, and even a die hard, super ready prepper can be screwed over from one choice.

Bad: I didnt like the elevator situation. Didnt make sense unless the elevator was 50 years old or something. It was a university (some universities in the states are over 200 years old). Either way, it needed a little more attention to detail in my opinion. But as mentioned before, I think the examples of pregnant wife, alone 16 y/o, die hard prepper, wealthy young couple, etc, were all very very good examples and eye openers.

If you havent seen "American Blackout", go to youtube and watch.

What did you think?

I know it was dramatized for entertainment value but I honestly think such an event in real life would hold a lot of drama and peoples reactions would run the gamut of that portrayed and more. I think more and more people watching shows like this , the message to be a little more prepared is sinking in, and the more prepared everyone is, the better we fare but I still think that it reinforced for me that the level of opsec needs to be tight because all people are not created equal in their behaviours and morals or even finances and abilities . For me that means my opsec needs to be taken up several notches and it isn't something I have seen definitive discussions and examples of much . There is very little need for the level of extreme descretion we need to implement until there is an out of control situation escalating to being worse , where we suddenly need that operational security in place from the outset . I know I am quite insulated from impacts that would create such an extreme danger and so I really have little idea of the course of events that could antagonize a situation to this extreme situation but we do have examples taking place around the globe to learn from from Bosnia , Libya, Haiti, Pakistan , Japan and now the Phillipines and more .
I will definitely be rewatching this.

Preparedness is like a condom , I've rather have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it

I thought that 3 days in the people were way to civil. I would expect much worse from most people. The uber prep guy was a bit authoritarian and forceful but I get his point about sharing supplies. Too many, knowing too much, draws heat. I didn't learn all that much from it but it did light a firecracker under my butt to get more stuff in order, immediately.

Their = They have their things.
They're = They're going to the mall.
To = They came to the house.
Too = That's too bad.

Just watched this on Youtube. My take was that most of the people were annoying idiots and kept waiting for a savior..which I guess is realistic, unfortunately. The kids stuck in the elevator were pretty innovative. It shows how the uber prep guy's achilles heel was not socialising how family as to what to do, plan & skill-wise. Also his apathetic daughter and her poor choice of boyfriend, and it seemed like his wife was not very helpful or supportive. The boy was a bit young to be doing patrols by himself. The bit with the nurse's teenager son, with the revolver in the bathroom mirror - that made me cringe. Obviously his mom never showed him how to handle them properly. The young mom seems like the most 'together', emotionally. I can imagine how stressful it would be to have a sick newborn and a scared little girl to reassure.

The ending, where all the electricity magically comes back on, just like that, is TOTALLY unrealistic. In a grid-down situation from a cyber attack, especially like one depicted here, due to the problem of large transformers being damaged, it would take weeks and months, if not longer, to replace them and get them set up. They are so heavy you need special trains and trucks just to transport them. Repairs would be piecemeal, not all at once.
