Is anyone considering using ATVs in their plan?

Last fall I purchased a next to new Rhino from a young fellow who was drowning in debt, fired from the oil patch due to safety infractions, one small child and one on the way.... and on top of that ......no savings. I felt bad for the wife and kids so I got him off the hook and put some food on their table.

Anyway I had put it out behind the shop and almost fogot about it. Covered in pine needles, cob webbs, flat tire and a hornets nest I pulled it around and started cleaning it up. Once cleaned up and serviced, I took it out for a ride for an hour or so. This thing is freaking blast and it will go almost anywhere. I'm use to normal 4 wheelers and only thought these side by sides were for work only.

I just might add this rig to the "plan"....

Ohhhhh, that looks FUN. I've been thinking about ATVs for bugging out (and just for all around playing with), but I've got other things to work on first.

It looks like it would not only be a blast to take through the woods but also be very functional with the box in the back able to carry things and with the extra seat to have someone ride beside the driver.
The only thing that worries me about the SHTF is if an EMP is what causes the SHTF and in that case would it fry the electrical and electronic components of the ATV and cause it to stop dead?
But until that day comes it would be a great for anyone to have.

I have been playing with the idea of adding a small wood gasifier to a quad. Possibly using an off road utility trailer. Although with work lately, I have not had the time to work on the woodgas generator yet. So the wood powered quad still needs to wait.

Crier,

If a person is in a position to acquire a side by side before the SHTF, I believe that is a sound investment for today and tomorrow.

In the event that you have no choice but to evacuate your home for another location, it would be wise to have the option of having a side by side or similar type quad. You may need your F-550 4x4 to tow your RV and quad and extra fuel, but once you get to your "safe" location you will want the most versatile transportation that uses the least amount of fuel per km traveled. You may or may not need top end speed in the 70 mph range, most do not. I would suggest the smallest engine that will move you, your co-pilot and the gear. 500cc to 600cc should suffice. Unfortunately, most of the big quad manufactures are looking to build bigger and faster side by sides. The new ones use engines near 1000cc and I will bet they consume a lot more fuel. Worse case scenario a 1000cc engine will still use a lot less fuel than your 5.7 litre in your pickup truck.

So, yes I believe there is a place in your bugout plan for an ATV.

If I was to get an ATV for bugout, I'd go with an 8 wheeled Argo. Snow, mud, dirt, sand, swamp or even crossing a lake, Argo's are, IMHO, a true ATV. Of course, I don't have one, my ATV has hooves instead.

I have a second sea can that I have grounded the hinges and then grounded the can with a 6' grounding rod and 5/8" copper cable. I store four of my families 4 wheelers in the can and mine I have at the house for daily run abouts. The grounded sea can stores all of my emergency equipment that is electronic sensitive.

My first choice is the Pinzgauer and trailer, second is now my horses for quick get away then the last choice would be the ATVs in a bug out scenario.

@buggie, on my 700 Grizz, I get about 120 km on a tank. $22.00 to fill.

I'm in the process of building a rail platform to store ATVs above each other saving more space.

I have enough camo netting and gillie material that I purchased in Idaho to cover an acre of land.

No worries on color.

I would have to agree the side x side makes and excellent BOV. If anyone is considering this I would strongly suggest you look at the Polaris Ranger Diesel 900. This was my choice since I am a big diesel fan and my truck is diesel. The low torque on this animal is amazing and it has a rated towing capacity of 2000lbs! Also I was told it would not be wise to head out in the bush without a winch. I have only ever used the winch to pull out quads at Maclean Creek so I guess as long as people keep buying quads it will come in handy in a good neighbor sorta way. Just a little friendly poke at my 4x4 cousins!

Cheers
