This will sound dumb to lots of you- i appologize in advance. I understand that there are crank radios that bring in AM,FM,Weather brodcasting and ham. In the case of a sun flare I have read that transformers will be damaged or destroyed, so i'm thinking that would eliminate the first three at least for a period of time. My questions are-
Will ham radios still be operational at that time?
Will our cell phones be able to work if we can find a way to charge them?
Where i live there is a new Telus communication tower-will that only help telus subscribers or does that work for ham opperators also?
Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

Hi srdprep (and Prom now too :))... I just went to their website to sign up for it, but didn't see how I could. I left a message for the person listed there so hopefully will hear back. Was there a way to sign up/look for an opening, that I missed, or is registration only once you get there? I hope there is another spot left 😐

Cheers.

GM

It's a bit ironic, but the guy running the communication course is poor at communicating.

As far as I know it's ok to just show up on monday with cash:
7:00pm - 9:30pm
DeVry institute of Technology room 208
2700 3rd Ave SE

Most likely not, unless they are protected from the EM event at the time it occurs.

The cell network would most likely be badly damaged by a solar flare/EMP. so no.

It would only work for cell phones. But if the cell network was destroyed and no longer being used, it would make a great HAM antenna tower.

Faraday cage (easy enough to make) around radios will protect them from EMP. They should then be able to reach other radios likewise protected... I'd think.

or a galvanized steel garbage can with your electronics sealed in a heavy plastic bag, or one of those metalized ziplock bags for food storage with a regular ziplock inside of that , or just stored underground (and no your basement doesn't count).

I called John a few times last week, I left a voice message and sent an email and he got back to me at the beginning of this week. I guess he was out of city. We shouldn't be too hard on him, this is probably a volunteering thing so they are giving up their own time to help other people.

There is no sign up process prior to the beginning of the course just show up with the money like srdprep said.

See you there

that's an entire new topic and we' would have to rely on other people's guesses as I don't see how this can be tested at home. I've also heard/read that packing them up in aluminum foil would work too. It better work cause that's my plan for now. 😀

Don't forget to add an insulation layer as well. i.e. plastic bag, then aluminum foil.

Aluminum foil is for hats. Don't let them read your thoughts!

See you all after.
