Its been awhile since anyone has brought up Bugout bags and what to put in them. I thought I would revitalize this for anyone new to the forum or the prepping game. Also, I wanted to put up a new list I have put together for my own purposes, and see what others may have to offer for suggestions (additions, subtractions, or otherwise).

I came across this list on another preppers weblog, and have adapted it to my own uses, featuring items that I have in my bag that were not on their list, and adding items on their list that I do not yet have in my own. Some of the items are taken directley from their list. Comments and critisisms are welcome! (also, I think the format is good for laying out your own Bugout Bag needs... seeing as how the blog author is no longer allowed on these forums, I dont think they would mind me passing this along to all of you... at least I hope not!). Please post your own lists if you are so inclind. We all can learn from eachother after all.

Its really not that much. the largest item in the bag is a 20 liter waterproof stuff sack full of the clothing. The sleeping bag is also too heavy for my liking, and I am currently exploring other options for that.

other then that, everything else is quite small. Also i choose the lightest weight options i can find. I search hiking and backpackings stores for "ultralight" hiking options. Sometimes you pay a bit more for these items, but the weight loss is worth it. ounces = pounds after all

12 gauge 12.5 inch barrel Shotgun

HUH? I thought the minimum length for a shotgun barrel was 20" (20+ years ago) although I believe I have seen 18.5" barrels as of late but 12.5".... I'll call you on that one. 😈

Legal. You can't saw off but you can buy them. See a news article on this : http://globalnews.ca/news/365045/sawing-off-a-shotgun-can-mean-serious-prison-time-but-loophole-allows-new-shotguns-with-8-5-inch-barrels/

But... I do have a question however, do you have a pump gun? How does the .22 adapter work?

Don't have the pump or adaptor yet. It's a set up I'm looking at later on this summer to replace the sks (too heavy for a walk out pack gun). The shotgun regulations are for total length of the entireg" gun... Including buttstock. Their are 8.5 inch barrel and 12.5 inch barrels available as well as the more common ones you listed.

The adapters are available at basspro. When I get one I will do a review and let you all know if these are a viable option.
Another setup I was looking at was the over/under 12 gauge and .308 rifle barrel setup. But these are heavy, and full length fire arms, and requires a lot of heavy ammo to justify

Another note is that the adaptors are designed to be used in a break action, but everything I've read says they work in pumps as well.

That's all fine and good (while very surprising for me). Id rather go for a longer barrel and swing away stock in a pump action. It would get more energy at the muzzle and wild animal knock down power (not that a short barrel isn't deadly) is what it's all about for me.

Thanks for the enlightenment.

I'd be interested in hearing from you when you get it. I'm not sure how you'd insert the adaptor in a pump gun. That said, with such a short barrelled shotgun (and even shorter .22), hunting would be extremely difficult.

The adaptor in in the shape of a shell. Just load it in the chamber and fire. The 8.5s are accurate out to 50 yards or so depending on the shot size, but the longer barrels obviously would be more effective. Perhaps a 12.5 folding stock might find is way into my bag.

The idea for this shotty/.22 combo is for a dedicated pack gun. Won't leave my bag unless being used.

Just saw this gun, and I want it, and if the SHTF then you can put on the pistol grip stock. 😈

You could also look at the bull-pup system but they are not designed for hunting either I suppose...
