Well this is a tough subject...its not for everyone I know...but for those willing to do what it takes I think there is a place for it...now I very much am a hands on guy, I really only like posting on things I am doing, or have done...the hypothetical, and pretend I will leave to others, like the scientoligists and wet_P preppers. I gave it a try last week...it was a spur of the moment thing, opertunity presented itself and I took it...sometimes you just have to do that.. Now I am not big on making utube vids but I know people want to see pic's, without pic's they think it didnt happen...So I snaped a few pics, a few of, how should I say this,...the messy parts...things hanging out and such. I think its important to show everything the good and not so good. how else would you know if you have the stomach for it , so to speak, and what parts are where, what parts are good...what tools to use...it was a learning experience and I share it so others can see the possibilities even if they deceided its not for them. I dont know the legal ramifications of such activities....or the moral.......likely frowned on at the very least, I will leave that for others to pass judgment on. I did say I did this last week...I waited until now to post, as I wanted to make sure there were no ill effects. Some people try something and right away say it was great, I am a little more cautious and like taking my time...The devil is in the details..So lets begin...as you can see the subject is as near as I can tell 24 years old or so, but to be kind is in rough shape, been laying outside for a while, in fact thats where found, not much potential here so no great loss, wont be missed...

Now I have tried to post my pics but this board says "board attachment quota exceded" Do to the nature of the topic, and its importance I will stop...its just to hard to describe without the aid of pics as some people I am sure have not seen such a thing..So I will stop right here until Denob fixes the problem...then I will continue..

I'm seriously hoping that when I get the attachment issue fixed, that your photos reveal a really funny joke!

Denob, I love to be funny, sometimes funny looking even. But this is a serious learning post done soley for the benifit of others, I am selfless that way..Please dont detract from that by getting all "moral" "legal" "can it put a eye out" or "what would the neibours think" on me.
Like my two other serious posts, cowboys & engines, and refrigeration, this to should have value, or some value to others, even though it may be outside the bounds of conventional practice. I often walk out of bounds....thats where the best rum is kept.

I guess this interlude might be a good time to mention why maybe our native brother calls the bear "his brother" too. I've guided for bear and we never hang the carcass where a potential customer might see it on the way in. This is because the bear skinned out has a somewhat eerie appearance to that of a fellow human and customers might then quickly leave.

Now the following video will show you somewhat what I mean at the end as that is when the meat is finally hanging without hide. I will mention that you can tell this is a fall bear by the amount of fat on the carcass. This takes away alot of the aspect but you can guess what is meant with the reflection of our being somewhat related. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uShchrL25hk

Also you get a lesson on skinning too. Hanging the meat is the best way as it keeps things clean and allows you to pull steady without the meat otherwise moving. A fall bear is not as good eating unless you boil the meat before cooking as the fat content is far more noticeable. Even when barbequing, you get way too much char broil due to the constant flame of the bear grease burning. The rug is best in the fall but the meat was better with the spring hunt. Convince politicians who banned the spring hunt on that one if they don't like folks shooting bear for just the hides.

I've included a photo of the camp a good friend of mine just bought this month. Not much to look at just yet as it has been closed for years,(a real fixer upper) but a new place to hang my hat when I'm bored of town life. It'll be the 4th camp friends of mine have bought so it seems my first job in life as a guide might even be my last one too...

I'll be out next week for the winter stay lol. You still have leaves??? As for the cannibalism, hey not my cup of tea but gophers do it for protein?? The Donner party might have a few Halloween things to say about this as well.

Only fore Halloween. If only one of ten thousand Americans turned to cannibalism...that's a hell of a lotta survivalist cannibals that gave up on humanity that are now feral and need to be put down for social humanity to continue. Russian advice on the matter. If someone is chunky during a collapse....don't make friends.

The original post is long gone but I tracked this shortened version down- https://suite.io/kerry-kubilius/ez6270

What? I have been gone, and come back to find you are talking about eating people 😕 ...your sick... c5 I thought better of you...I said canibalism, not cannibalism...preppers dictionary..canibalism- the repurposing of other wise defunked equipment and parts....maybe salvage would lead to less confusion..
Anyway back to where I left of...I rounded up some old batts to take to the scrap yard, big 2 volt Excide ones, Heavy monsters they are I let the guy sling them and lift them out of the truck one at a time, so while they did this I wandered over to the electrical scrap pile.....and seen this sorry fellow laying about, It was missing the side covers and likely had been laying there for near a decade going by the rust. I recognized this as a princess auto mig welder. I had seen this for sale maybe 24 years back (1990)and droolled over it at the time but I was poor and could not afford it...anyway the thought came to me that I would like another battery charger, a heavy duty one....I could see the heavy gauge windings, and thought lets try it and see...

It looked pretty sad, likely the board failed, the rest is bullet proof.

it says 120 amp output..yea right, from a 15 amp outlet I dont think so (or not for long), but if I could get a third I would be happy.

So here is the brains of the unit

Here the brains are removed, it dont need no brains to charge batts

wires hanging about.

now with most the wiring gone, side cutters work well for this. Note the funny white thing ontop of the transformer coils..thats a mechanical thermal switch, I wired it back into the cct and that gives me thermal protection from over heating. if it gets to hot the unit just shuts itself off until it cools off, then turns itself back on.

Now with a quick plug butt spliced in to give it a test....its just that easy....The clue as to why this unit is a good candidate, and others may not, is in this pic, and the second pic I posted.

Here is how it looks now.

I found a voltmeter to add from my junk pile, and put it in the openning where the mig gun went, still looking for a ammeter.

anyway, changing the wiring took all of ten minutes... another ten to find a cord to hook up and thats all.

On the front you will see a selector switch, turns out the 1 position is perfect for 12 volt banks, and the 3 and 4 is good for 24 volt banks. Its out on loan now on a 24 volt bank)

The number one position hammers out as much as 44 amps (if batts are low 12.2) doing 38amps at roughly 13.2 volts, and durring testing I even did a equallization charge to 15 volts DC just for funzzies and that transformer was still hammering out 36-37 amps at 15 volts. took 5.5 solid hours non stop, to get to 15 volts as the bank was so large.
now at first even though it was working well, when I crunched the numbers I only came in at roughly 58 % eff.
ok but not great, A first rate top of the line Ioto is at 80% ( but north of $300.00 in price) so I tried a few things and hit 60% another thing brought me up to 69-70% eff. I have hit a wall there, but thats ok, I consider 70% peak, maybe 67% ave pretty damn good...and guess what? this charger was driven by that same 200 dollar genny I recommended. This thing will outlive me.Emp, cme no problem!

Now lets think outside the box.... anyone do electroplating?, anodizing?......ever price out a power supply for doing that...last time I checked 1000's of dollars...with just a little change to it , I could use it for that as well..

I should add dont assume all such small mig welders are good candidates they are not! in fact some will not work at all, let alone poorly...if you have a specific model you want to change around, pm me and I will look at the spec's, or a picture of the guts of it should give me a good idea.

The Bible has something to say about this.

Great, whats it say about knocking the voltage back in phase with the current? Im trying to get a couple more % eff I will take all the help I can get.....just having fun with you... welcome...I play rough.
How come none of those 10 commandments didnt bother to say "thou shall not own another" god, that would have saved so much grief dont you think? Well not for me I am white.

Well well, you sure like playing with words don't you?

Well done on getting attention to a subject not often discussed. Let's not go down to the subject even less discussed... For obvious reasons.

I regret not having spent more time closer to my grandpa. He was a champ at picking up "junk" at the landfill and using it to build or repair stuff. Mostly pumps, power tools, a/c units, that kind of stuff. Would have been good to learn from him!
