On the front you will see a selector switch, turns out the 1 position is perfect for 12 volt banks, and the 3 and 4 is good for 24 volt banks. Its out on loan now on a 24 volt bank)

The number one position hammers out as much as 44 amps (if batts are low 12.2) doing 38amps at roughly 13.2 volts, and during testing I even did a equalization charge to 15 volts DC just for funzzies and that transformer was still hammering out 36-37 amps at 15 volts.

So let me get this straight...you took a broken 120/240 volt mig welder and bypassed the broken power supply and thus converted it to 12/24 volt instead? And then you hook it back up to either batteries or battery chargers and you now have a functional unit again, right?

I'm both curious as heck and impressed too as I don't know how to do this and have been tinkering with electrical and electronics for many years. Can't say I've thought about it but I can see the advantages as you'd finally have a welder on your vehicle with temperature range control for little cost. Is this because they start as a DC system and you bypassed the converter to AC?

Knuckle...no not a 120 240 volt mig, Just a 120 volt ac (primary) though they say 120 on the front thats refering to the output in DC. too be honest I didnt know if it was broke to begin with, didnt care.No I never changed it to put out 12 or 24 volts it always did that by itself infact on the front it tells you its roughly rated voltage range, something like 15 volts (close enough for 12 volt batts) to a max of 32 volts dc...just depends on how you load it.in fact while I cant get over 69 70% eff when used on 12 volts (hitting 70% at the peak of a equalization charge), on a 24 volt bank It would do over 70, in fact it would be better on a 24 volt bank, not that its shabby on a 12 volt one.

I dont want to make anyones eyes glaze over with babble give me time and I will send you a pm on power supply theory...my self learned theory, in the mean time check the dumpsters behind princess auto. though your questions just gave me a thought ...I cut out all the stuff that made it a mig welder (cv) and now have a mostly CC batt charger...but being CC now I bet I could use this as a 120volt stick welder sure not a real powerfull one but a handy little unit.....down the rabitt hole I go, back when I have lit up some rods...oh wait I got to get it back first.

oh I see why you thought it was 120, 240...it says dual mig on the front...they mean it can function with gas or without (flux core wire)
Dont know about ethanol gas though, that might be to hydroscopic if it sat around unused for to long.

Well well, you sure like playing with words don't you?

Well done on getting attention to a subject not often discussed.

It was discussed a lot , I kept saying I couldnt post pic's, I think c5 and I am sure others said the same thing

Ohwww. Its not like I haven't done it once or twice....or ten times before. Misleading titles that is, not cannibalism.
BTW...What the bible has to say on the matter....Well....its been almost two decades since I ate The Body of Christ...And drank the Blood. I somehow have to come up with a Halloween joke about electrical Vampire loads ....but I am getting nothing.

I got it back and was able to test it out as a stick welder, It worked but not great, the volt amp curve must be off a little, I have better machines to stick weld with so this will stay as a batt charger now.
