My wife is trying to compile a list of canned foods to purchase that doesn't have the "white lining" in them. If you purchase canned food that doesn't contain the "white lining" and would like to share it with us, please do so, it would be greatly appreciated. You can send the information by PM to us and we'd be happy to post one list on-line and update it regularly so folks wouldn't have to follow the paper trail to compile a list.
What's the matter with the white lining?
What's the matter with the white lining?
It leaks a harmful chemical into the food which disrupts hormones and is linked with causing serious health problems. My wife seen a tv show with a specialist on this topic last year and she feels if we're going to do any prepping, we should do it to the best of our ability to help us survive and keep us as healthy as possible.
Canning your own food is best...if you get a pressure cooker/canner you can even can meats, beans, chilli base ect..you can buy butter on sale (if you dont have a cow) and can your own butter/ghee also...purchase a dehydrator and dehydrate veg, fruit, milk, eggs, pasta sauces, tomato paste, etc...you can make your own yogurt easily with a pot and an electric heating pad or even better in the bathtub inside a cooler and store in the fridge...your own food if always better!`
Here's a list: http://guide.thesoftlanding.com/bpa-free-canned-food-options/ mostly for the US audience.
This ones more Canadian! http://blog.naylanaturalcare.com/2012/03/bpa-free-canned-products-in-canada.html
Anything that comes in a glass jar is BPA free. I use glass canning jars to store many dried items as well as for canning. Canning is easy to learn! 🙂 Tetra packs are also BPA free.

I like the fact people are sweating the details such as the white lining. However I don't want other people to be suddenly woeful about a food they like and have been putting through their ( and loved ones) bodies.
Yes there are trace elements of bad stuff in the white lining, but the product inside is what will keep us alive. And mabey mini ravioli is exactly the comfort food you will need at that moment to lift your spirits and energy level to complete a muchh needed task.
Keep these good ideas and concerns coming, but if you can't get to your supply on day three and I hand you a can of soup that you know has the lineing, please don't sweat the issue.
If it happens and you are one of the lucky ones who can haul backside to a store while there is still stuff on the shelves, put the white fear behind you, fill your cart and get the hell out of town.
This all being said I will pay attention to similar concerns now. But I will still have mini ravioli and gummie bears on hand.
Hmmm, maybe I should rethink the quiet part...
you could always can your own mini ravioli. everyone wins 🙂
See you all after.
Very true quietman!
This is Mountaineers wife responding. I didn't post this to put fear into everyone but rather to make folks aware of supporting companies of canned goods that don't use this lining especially if they're prepping for longevity and healthier lifestyle. I reccomend that folks who haven't already started prepping to "NOT" get hung-up on prepping with canned goods based on whether or not they have this lining especially if you haven't started prepping yet but if you are concerned with the prepping in a healthier way, and you have time to shop, then go for it! I am a mother, wife and prepper who is trying to prep to keep my family as healthy as possible and that includes minimizing health problems appearing because of things like things like this.
Just my two cents.

I have never made ravioli so I might need to put that on my future list of things to try. 🙂
Anyone own their own canning system? (not the canning system used with glass jars)

Hi Mountaineer's wife!
I have been canning chicken for the past few weeks in my pressure canner, but I don't have the metal type of canner available, but I do know that the Mormon's at their Home Food Storage Centers do have these available. I am not a member of their Church but have purchased mylar bags and 02 absorbers from them at a very reasonable cost and they were incredibly helpful. You do need to make an appointment to go in, and I am not certain what else could be canned there. They have a list that you can access through their Provident Living website, which includes bulk items like beans and sugar, etc. I have found sugar to be more expensive there and I am wondering if anyone would be interested in a thread dealing with current specials on staple ingredients in Alberta at the local stores. Last week, 10 kg bags of white sugar were available for $7.99 on a one day special but I wasn't online to post it nor was I sure that anyone would be interested. Thoughts anyone?

Hi Mountaineer's wife!

If there is not a forum on it already, I think that is a great idea. Posting any specials on staple goods, or really any other SHTF appropriate supplies in your area would be very helpful (survival gear, medical supplies, anything). Sometimes people have a "shopping day", and miss out on other great deals, and end up paying $10 for an item that was on for $7 yesterday. obviously the difference will add up. If anyone sees something that is obviously a steal, why not let everyone else know? (after you have purchased all that YOU need of course 😆 )
See you all after.
I think having a separate post on latest and great food deals is a fantastic idea! Anyone care to start it?
What if we take this idea one step further...have one person from each city step-up to the plate to negotiate a "bulk" deal on items each group in your area is really interested in. I love a good saving! 😀 Nobody needs to know why we want to bulk buying prices.
Mountaineers Wife
Green Giant has gone completely BPA free in their cans, and their cans are everywhere. For veggies, at least.
I realize this is most likely a way down the road prospect, but it is one that those who are serious should plan for.
If a group of us can get together and a community is started, one thing we should discuss at the next meeting is possibly forming a co-op or non profit which could then qualify for bulk buying at true wholesale prices. Then each member could put in their orders and we could all save money on what is needed.
Even if we don't have a location to build at yet, we could get a storage space to be used by folks that don't have room in their homes, such as apartment, condo and townhouse dwellers.
Here is an opportunity for someone with a large acreage or farm to step up if they have room for a sea can, trailor or maybe an available steel grainery. Our co-op should be willing to pay rent for this just the same as a storage facility, but this way it is away from onlookers.
Hmmm, maybe I should rethink the quiet part...
2 items...
Great idea quietman
I had some Busch (sp) pork and beans this weekend. It had the white lining in case anyone wants to know. I don't think I would have noticed either if not for this thread. Does white automatically mean bad? That would suck as they are good beans!
