Here's the story of the wood stove in my cabin.
We bought our place in 2007 and the cabin was a shack. The principle heat was a wood cook stove which the owners took with them. Not to worry though. In the chicken coop, they left a wood stove which they had used before they bought the cook stove. The coop the stove was in was 100 sq. ft., but the stove is rated for 1500 sq. ft. One winters night, when the tempuratures were down in the -30's, they lit the stove to keep their chickens from freezing. Again, a stove designed to heat a 1500 sq. ft. house, in a 100 sq. ft. chicken coop. You can probably guess the result.
The stove spent the next 5 years gathering dust, insects and chicken manure. We moved it out into the driveway and went over it with a wire brush and brillo pads. Then I built a good, roaring fire in it and afterward went through it again with pine sol and more brillo pads. I installed the stove in the cabin and it's done great service for us ever since.
