Hello All,

I originally was looking for a back system for a portable solar/hybrid system I made last year. I originally bought a cheap air cooled diesel that ended up being loud enough to work as home protection in a pinch! My ears are still ringing!

I was looking for something liquid cooled that was small enough I could handle myself and quiet. The only thing I could find was ridiculously expensive and 400 plus pounds. Not quite finished but thought to post a couple of pics in case anyone is thinking of trying the same thing and I can save them some pain.

Kubota D722 3 cycle diesel motor
10 kw Generator head
PVC enclosure ID ( 2'x2'x3') double walled PVC to be filled with PU foam for whisper quiet operation.
7 gallon PVC fuel tank
Aluminum sub-frame, motorcycle exhaust, and rad

I was shooting for sub 300 but it is looking like it is going to come in at right around 300-310 dry and without battery.
Cheers,

Looks like a great project. Do you have any specs on the 10KW Generator? I was looking at a used diesel generator about two years ago. The price was right but the voltage was not stable and nowhere near a usable sine wave.

ICRCC,

I bought this from Brand New Engines. http://www.brandnewengines.com/ . I looked around a bit and for the price and reviews I heard the mecc alte is good value and for sure can run your electronics without issue. They have cheaper units as well but Mecc Alte seems to be generally considered a good mid-range generator head. There is a guy on microcogen selling one slightly smaller brand new. I also have a used Marathon Pancake for sale for 250 but it needs to be mated to a 10hp engine with a SAE #5 bell housing. Good luck.

What do you think the final cost of the build will be?

What do you think the final decibel level will be?

My only concern is the placement of the exhaust in conjunction with where your PVC fuel tank is, especially once you enclose it.

I have a new exhaust takeoff from a 2007 Buell Ulysses that may work better and more quiet.... Free if your interested.

Thanks for the feedback. A genuine concern for sure. The exhaust is a little over 2 inches away and if it proves to be an issue I may take you up on that offer. I have pretty much compiled every thing with exception of some wiring and battery. I am confident it is going to come in right around 4000. However that does take into account my time or any of the aluminum and steel welding consumables. I have no idea the decibel level but I intend to measure it. Definitely more of an undertaking than I anticipated but it has developed into a bit of a hobby and I have learned a lot about generators not too mentioned having a solid excuse to hang out in the garage. That might even be the motive behind starting my next project ...a Changfa 195 and ST generator head.

Cheers

You will like the changfa's and a non avr st head is dead reliable. Since you are from Calgary I am wondering if you bought yours from "Gary"

Well I think you did a great job, I'll be interested to see what your decibel level comes in at. Price was right as well.

I picked up a Kubota 13.5K last year at a sale as a back up to my large Cummin generator. It is only 5 decibels louder than a Honda 3000eu running at full capacity. When our power is out, I can auto switch from the Kubota at night then back to the cummins during the day. I also like the fact it is more mobile with the fork slots. I bent some pipe and built a heat shield to run it out the wall of my shop.

Analog Man,

No I did not get it from Gary. I know of him from the microcogen site and he offered to keep an eye out for me when I was looking for an engine. I do not have my ST head yet so with him being in Calgary I will probably reach out to him to see if he can track one down for me even though his website only lists the smaller ones.

Nice Kubota. When I was originally looking around that was at the top of the list. The animal I was really after was the northern-lights 9kw unit. I was really looking for something light and when I considered the weight and price I decided to go this route. Now if I had that pretty skid steer I would have saved myself the grief for sure.

Cheers

I do believe he has 5kw ST'S, would be near perfect to direct couple to a 195, with the rpms droped to 1800, A little less noise, and wear that way. I am in the middle of a 175 with a belted 2kw st head. Will be running the 175 in the 1000-1200 rpm range, goal isnt max power per liter of fuel rather longest run time per liter while producing 1kw+ at 100% DC
My target is 4hrs per liter. Will be changing the timing, adding flywheel mass and likely experiment with propane fumigation to take the knock out, and promote cleaner burning.
Have to get to Calgary to pick up my st before I can continue.

Four hours per liter, impressive.

If I get there it will be, but remember thats a light load, best to date is around 2.3 hrs on one liter driving a 5kw head with a listeroid at 375-400 rpm. The changfas are supposed to be more effiecient yet, driving a more appropreate size head for the light load I will have less field losses, as a percentage of output, it should make a difference. How much I dont know yet, but will find out.
