Flicking through the Calgary Metro free pages I came across a tiny article advertising 'Adults Only Night' at the Calgary Telus Spark Science Centre. Funny how those three words attracted me... but I continued reading and much to my pleasant surprise between 6pm and 10pm on November 8th, 2012 they are holding a evening for adults to "find out if you could live ‘off the grid’ and start to hone your survival skills. You know…just in case."

They pose the question: "What would happen if some catastrophic event struck and you could no longer rely on modern conveniences to get by? Where would start? How would you cover your basic needs?"

Read more about it @ http://sparkscience.ca/events/adults-only-nights/adults-only-night-11/

I hope to be attending... I'm hoping to meet a few local preppers there!

Get educated, and be prepared to survive the uncertainty of the near future…

I would be interested to hear how it goes afterwards if you felt like giving us a little report about what was talked about or covered, it does speak volumes that these things are starting to appear, wonder what kind of turn out you will see at the event..

Evening All,

After a death defying drive to and from Calgary in a blowing snow storm, thanks for the excellent driving Traveller!! I am here to report that the Science Centre night was totally LAME.

Attended by Traveller, Omniscient One and myself.

The only saving grace was the solar power trailer provided by SAIT - Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Derek the solar guy. He knows his stuff and the trailer was well equipped.

With that said, those who did not make the venture out in the snow, I hope you didn't buy your tickets online, because the don't give refunds. YOU did not miss a thing. The preparedness stations were not even Cub Scout level.

Assessing the attire and footwear of the attendees, I can only make one assessment.........in the event of a SHTF or TEOTWAWKI everyone we saw there is going to die. Sorry folks there is no sugar coating this. These people are not prepared. Gucci leather shoes may work in Banker's Hall, but they won't help you in a disaster!

I was expecting more, this was the science centre after all. Where was the science of being prepared for a natural disaster?? Where were your expects to help educate, not entertain these people/sheeple that attended.

Just my thoughts on this. If you attended and we somehow missed each other, what was your take on this night's event??

Drive safe everyone,

Mountainman.

ive heard poor things about the new science center and its displays time and again. I tossed the idea of going around for about 3 seconds then decided the snow was not worth it. glad I made the right choice. To think, if one of the board members would stumble across this forum and ask one of us to sign on as an advisor to the program, the night could have been a hit!

personally I think they probobly went the way they did because your average joe isnt interested or worried about what kind of shoes they wear, or what a preperation station is. Further more, the idea of being "prepared" is still "scary" to most people. nobody wants to go see an exhibit that will frighten them... even though they probobly should!

thanks for making the trip guys and letting me know that my choice to stay home was the right one! safe travels back home.

See you all after.

Yes... agreed... it was rather lame. How to start a fire, how to build a shelter, how to insulate yourself from the cold, how to do stuff with one hand tied behind your back, and hula-hoops !?!?! As you pointed out Mountainman "not even Cub Scout level". I stood there for a good while "guiding" them on what they needed and how to start a fire... but it was a little difficult (I know, I know... a good tradesman never blames his tools) but they had some poor tools and tinder. I asked for a carbon steel knife blade to show them how to create a better spark, they gave me a stainless steel butter knife. They had 9v batteries and SOS pads (you know the steel wool covered in blue soap!?) Oh my! And the tinder was bought at Michaels! Moss and straw and sticks as thick as my pinky! I'm almost positive that there was some fire retardant material sprayed on the straw. It did burn eventually, but it didn't take a spark easily. And then they were trying and failing to light their fires with a match! A SAFETY MATCH!!! You need to strike it on the box!!! Oh my! They seriously had no clue!!! And yes my 'bankers hall attire wasn't really appropriate for the prepper-verse but it was camouflage!!! I blended in nicely with the artsy-verse and the wine-drinking dumbed-down populace of reality-TV addicts (not that there's anything wrong with wine).

Take care people, get educated, and be prepared to survive the uncertainty of the near future…

Thanks for the report back, I hear that the snow was pretty heavy so thanks for those that braved the roads and took the time to write back, your report reminds me greatly of when I attend garden/hugelculture events, they are dealing in basic's to the point that most times I could just ahhh, but you never know when one of these will hit a gem in hiding.. it happens now an again.

Thanks for the synopsis everyone. We were driving north and west to go hunting and the roads did suck!
I'm glad I didn't delay our departure for a night of wine and cheese...
