I'm looking to expand my tree supply/future fire wood supply and was going to plant a bunch of green ash and coppice it as a never ending supply of wood, but all this news on emerald ash borer has me rethinking that. Any thoughts on trees for in the camrose stettler area... I planted some oak for my great grand kids but I need something that will grow a little faster, Manitoba maple maybe?

Two fast growing hardwoods are almost any maple and cottonwood. The maple will have more caloric value than the cottonwood in your stove but I think the cottonwood grows very slightly faster. I wouldn't grow cottonwoods upwind of any buildings that you wish to keep. I have remove one of two big cottonwoods on a lot that I recently bought. The second one won't see next fall.

I know this tree is a weed tree, but the Poplar is a quick growing tree. It burns slower than pine, and is a hot burner, but a grove of these trees could last a family a long time if, harvested selectively instead of clear cut. There once was a project where the Gov. was sponsering a mass planting in unused lots. I believe that they provided somewhere 200-1000 saplings. But that was a while ago. The Gov. was looking at turning Poplar into a Bio fuel.
